A fair way into the game, after you’ve ventured into Battahl and beyond, you may find yourself returning to Vernworth. When there, if you wander by the West Vernworth Oxcart Station, Guerroro will mention that he’s heard a rumour about a “phantom oxcart.” Upon hearing this rumour, “The Phantom Oxcart” side mission will commence.
Incidentally, you can also get this rumour and start this side quest if you visit Wilhelmina at the Rose Chateau Bordelrie in the Noble Quarter of Vernworth.
Now, the first part of this side quest is relatively straightforward. All you need to do is go to the bridge to the northeast of Vernworth (on the northern side of the farmland), and when the sun starts to set, an oxcart with blue lights will pull up, which you will observe from the bushes. After a brief exchange with Navil, the phantom oxcart will pull off, and you’ll be left to decide what to do with Navil, who was selling Pawns to this mysterious contraption - letting him go nets you 5,000 gold and the Merchant’s Document, if you’re interested in being nice.
Your next port of call is to take the Merchant’s Document to Brant (don’t go to Sven, as there’s a chance that you’ll bump into Minister Allard), and Brant will say the following:
“I bid Your Majesty follow the oxcart without arousing suspicion, that you might divine where it is headed. Alternatively…. mayhap Your Majesty could assume the guise of a pawn and await pickup in a likely location.”
So, that leaves you with two options: following the cart, or assuming the guise of a pawn and getting on board. How do you disguise yourself as a pawn, you may ask?
Well, easy - and not at all logical - but you need to remove all your armour and weapons (we removed our rings and cape too, just to be safe). Once you’ve done that, you can go back to the place where you originally encountered the oxcart (at the same time), and speak to the driver, who will open up the gate and allow you to get on board - this will also unlock the Are We There Yet? Trophy.
And that, ladies and gents, is how you board the phantom oxcart.
Once you’ve boarded the oxcart, it’ll take you to on a trip throughout pretty much the whole game world so far, stopping off for a first fight with goblins in the forests of Vermund, as well as stopping to get willingly beaten by the guards at the Checkpoint Rest Town, and ending with a showdown with a series of guards outside the Flamebearer Palace Spellseal Door in the Bakbattahl (you can of course equip your gear for this last fight).
Once you’ve defeated the last guard, you’ll get the Labor Requisition Order, which is all the evidence that Brant needs.
For your troubles, you’ll also get 14,500 gold, and the Ring of Momentum, which moderately boosts your maximum stamina. A decent day’s work, if we do say so ourselves.
