Microsoft has announced that the price of an Xbox Game Pass subscription is set to increase from today for new members, while Game Pass for Console will no longer be available for new members. Anyone who has already subscribed and has automatic payment renewal enabled will be able to continue their membership as-is.

Meanwhile, a new Game Pass tier called ‘Xbox Game Pass Standard’ will be available “in the coming months”, and the price of recurring charges for a subscription will increase from 12th September, with select countries excluded from the price hike. “These changes will enable us to bring members more value and more great games to Game Pass,” reads the announcement on the Xbox Support site.

Xbox Game Pass Standard will offer a library of games for $14.99 a month, but no access to day one releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will cost $19.99 a month, and still offer all the same benefits as before, including day one game releases.

There's a full country by country rundown of the price changes coming to Xbox Game Pass here.

  • This is absolutely fucking bullshit!!! I actually thought the Activision buy would be great for us, But its kicked us all in the face.

So because ive stayed loyal to xbox exclusives and played them day one. I now have to pay £20 a month because of call of fucking duty.. The games utter shit.. They should have made an Activision pass ffs.

With them giving nothing in rewards anymore and how many price increases in 3 years, Microsoft is really starting to piss me off with always hurting us. £240 a year... wow
  • @200kGamerScore if you think this is because of Call of Duty you're a goof, this is because games sell for 70 bucks brand new now, so it makes complete sense to increase by 5 bucks soon, you can always go to Sony where 20 bucks gets you nothing and no day one games, also there hasn't been a single price increase till now Gamepass Ultimate has bee 15 bucks since it's inception
  • £15 is reasonable, but I can't see myself subscribing to Ultimate for £20 upwards.
  • Still a deal and I pay for two ultimates to play with my 2 daughters.
The price of goods and services have gone way up. Look at food prices. It sucks all around.
  • It’s actually only raising by £2 in UK and $3 in the US so it’s not THAT bad
  • @5 that may for you and the US, but here in Canada we get shaft. Our game are 90.00 to start. I have been a XBOX live member for 20 years now and I think its time to think about hand it up. and @2 at least the Playstation is an actual gaming system. I don't know what to call the Xbox anymore.
  • Anyone who believed that they would NOT raise the cost of Game Pass after the ACTIVISION purchase is insane!
  • I mean if you have had it before this and it’s on automatic renewal you don’t have shit to worry about.
  • Its simple introduce a new gamepass membership called COD pass which only has cod games then charge £100 a month for that because cod players will pay that price. Then microsoft can reduce the price of the other game pass options.
  • I think everybody knew price rises would be coming at some point. Expensive day one games and Call of Duty were always going to push prices up.

Funnily enough I might get one month of Game Pass for COD though.
  • Time to pre-stack some codes, it seems.
  • Can we refund that CoD purchase MS made?
  • No surprises here, anyone with half a brain knew this was coming soon after Acti deal went through and whomever is still complaining now, must have been in hell if a denial lol
  • This report feels misleading to me, no-where does the official site state that day-one additions will not come to standard at all, which is what your wording seems to imply, AND you have neglected to mention that standard will include online.

Will all console games added to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate library also be available with Xbox Game Pass Standard?
    - Some games available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one will not be immediately available with Xbox Game Pass Standard and may be added to the library at a future date.

[It's possible that this just means that everything will stay as it currently is, but if you want COD day-1 you need Ultimate, we need more info.]

How is Xbox Game Pass Standard different from Xbox Game Pass for Console?
    - Unlike Xbox Game Pass for Console, online console multiplayer is included with Xbox Game Pass Standard. The Game Pass Standard library includes hundreds of high-quality games.
[So it's Gamepass console + Core for less than you'd have paid before, at the cost of removing the option to have just the full console selection of gamepass without being able to play online.]

Basically the new 3[4including PC only] tier system will be this:

    - Core : a few gamepass games and online play

    - Standard: full gamepass list, online play, possible delay before some games get added [Possibly only major yearly releases like COD.]

    - PC : Just PC gamepass and nothing else since gold isn't required [do they not use the same servers? If so why don't they have to pay and we do?]

    - Ultimate : Online, PC, plus the full console gamepass catalogue with day-1 additions. [Oh, also EA play for console and PC (though the PC games may be limited to just the ones that are also available on the console version? Not sure exactly how it works, but I seem to remember there being a distinction and you don't get the full PC EA Play?)]
  • @14 To answer your question @14 for PC, most games are not hosted on MS servers, even games on the Xbox. They are usually hosted by the specific game's publisher. Valve also hosts a lot on their own, as does Epic.

As to why PC gamers don't pay, it wouldn't work. Unlike consoles, PC has competitors launchers, so if a service decided to charge, just go to another. When you are on a console, you are completely controlled by the company that owns. So you guys pay because it was forced and you had no choice.
  • If nobody thought that the price would go up after the merger then I have some magic beans that I’d like to sell you.
