Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – How to beat Jori, Elder Inquisitor

Josh Wise

Jori, Elder Inquisitor is one of the sub-bosses in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and he’s one of the tougher ones. You will find him at the end of the Darklight Catacombs – a dungeon that you will need to hack your way through to get to the Abyssal Woods. Check out our guides on How to get to the Abyssal Woods and How to get to Darklight Catacombs in Shadow of the Erdtree.

How to beat Jori, Elder Inquisitor in Shadow of the Erdtree

First things first, Jori will pelt scythelike bolts of energy at you, and he likes to do that as soon as you enter the boss arena. With the wide arc bolts, you can actually jump cleanly over them.

What you want to do is run straight at him when he cues up his white-light attack. He summons blade of white light that shoot up form the floor, and you can avoid them while closing the gap. The best thing to then do is to get in a nice backstab. The backstab is one of the best tools for this fight.

When you backstab Jori, you not only get a good little chunk off of his health, but you give yourself a nice pocket of invincibility frames while you do it. This becomes more and more useful as the fight goes on, because you can avoid Jori’s annoying summons.

Also, get some easy hits in as Jori is lying on the ground, as there aren’t any invincibility frames for him when he’s down.

After a two to three hits, you want to immediately roll backwards, because he does an are-of-effect splash of golden light all around him.

Continue to leap over his wide arc attacks here – this isn’t very tough, as they move slowly enough – and then start running in wide arcs to avoid his smaller bolts. You can also stand behind the tombstones, which will block Jori’s projectiles.

Close the gap and start hacking away. Jori will either fire off a couple of close-range energy bolts, which you can dodge-roll through and keep up your attack, or he will wind up for a melee swipe with his staff.

When this happens, you can actually very easily kite around him and get in another backstab. He will soon start bringing in his summons, and this is where the fight gets tricky. In its earlier stages, it really isn’t a tough clash, but now you have to contend with some distractions.

The key to this is to remember that they are just that: distractions. The best thing for you to do is sprint toward Jori, ignoring the summons as best you can, and try to get in another backstab or some up-close physical attacks.

This is where the backstabs really take on a bigger importance, because now they let you avoid Jori’s attacks and also his summons, which will wither and dissipate after a short time, as you’re dealing damage to Jori.

Where it gets the most challening is when the large summons make their way in and try and belly flop you.

These summons really start to clog up the arena. The thing is, your tactic doesn’t really change; you just need to keep more and more vigilant about avoiding damage. Jori’s attacks and the attacks of the summons require keeping your eyes out, sprinting to cover ground, and careful dodge rolling.

Stick to it, and you will eventually wear this bastard down. Behold, the power of invincibility frames while backstabbing:
