Shadow of the Erdtree – How to get to Scadu Altus by skipping Castle Ensis

Josh Wise

Shadow of the Erdtree makes changes to Elden Ring’s Levelling system, focussing on Scadutree Fragments. These are strewn across the map, so if you are struggling in combat you may want to go after these. You can actually bypass a major story-critical area, Castle Ensis, and make your way to Scadu Altus, the next big chunk of the map.

By doing this, you unlock a whole new area to look for Scadutree Fragments, making your life a little easier when you want to go back and battle those bosses. First of all, you may want to check out our guide on the locations of All Scadutree Fragments in Gravesite Plain, as that will help you fill out the map and hoover up a load of fragments.

Start by going to the Castle Front Site of Grace, and you want to head southeast. Open your map screen and set down a couple of markers to guide your way. Set one on the underpass and another about halfway between that and the Castle Front Site of Grace – just to create a little line of direction that you can easily follow. (Hell, go nuts if you like, and set down a tonne of markers!)

Once you have gone through the large underpass, you will find yourself in a marshy area, and its main distinguishing characteristic is that it features a number of trolls who seem to like smashing up the area.

Ignore these boys and follow the swampy path left, then up and around to the right, and you will end up here on the map:

Sticking to this path, you will find, on the left, one those tornadoes that spring you upwards. It needs to be unlocked, but the little pile of stones that you need to smash in order to unlock it is only just up ahead. Follow the path and it will double back around above you, and you will find the little cairn there.

Now that that’s been taken care of, just leap in the tornado, and you will be catapulted upwards onto Scadu Altus. Specifically, you’ll be outside the Fort of Reprimand, which just as cheerful as it sounds. You don’t need to go in here, but you can if you like. Where you need to go is around the fort to the right, where you will find a tunnel.

On this path, you will find a dragon. Fortunately, he is busy killing a lot of soldiers, so you don’t have to worry about fighting him immediately. Just ignore the fracas and head off in search of glory – and also Scadutree Fragments.
