Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree – How to find the hidden coffin in the Shadow Keep

Josh Wise

As its name implies, it is a coffin, and it is hidden. Why should you find this coffin, you may be wondering. Simple: it transports you to somewhere else on the map, which is crucial for entering a certain area, called the Abyssal Plains. Here is how you find the hidden coffin.

How to find the hidden coffin in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

First, start at the Main Gate Plaza Site of Grace, which you will fins in the Shadow Keep. The Shadow Keep, by the way, is basically the big bad dungeon of Shadow of the Erdtree; it’s huge, with loads of Sites of Grave and loads of verticality. (Check out our guide on How to easily beat the Golden Hippopotamus, which is the first boss that you will find in the Shadow Keep.)

Anyway, from here head through the doorway on your left. Follow the path upwards and out onto the scaffolding. It will wind up and to the right and then back inside, and you will be in an opulent dining room

Run straight to the end, avoiding the archer’s arrows. You can fight everyone on the way or just run straight through without engaging in any combat. You will emerge onto a huge ledge, where you will find rows of burning boats. Run all the way to the end of the row of burning boats, avoiding the little fellas that leap out at you – or, again, fight them all. Your call

At the far end, you will find a ladder on the left-hand side. You can see it in the screenshot below; note the lost runes, showing where I fell off the ledge to my dreary death on a previous attempt.

Slide all the way down, and hug the edge of the building, because you’re right next to a big old deadly drop. Keep going forwards, and you will come to a small waterfall

Turn left at the waterfall and then go down the ladder, and follow this hallway until you come into a room a painting and a bare wall.

Pick up the painting here, and then hit that bare wall with your sword, and you will uncover a secret passage.

Follow this passage, and it will slope down to the left, and there, at the precipice of a long drop, you will see a sarcophagus – this is the hidden coffin that you’re after. Go up to it, and you will see a prompt that says “Rest in coffin.” This is what you want.

A cutscene will play, the coffin will dive off the edge, and you will awake in a new part of Scadu Altus. You will see a Site of Grace straight ahead of you, through an archway, called Castle Watering Hole. Well done! This is how you get to Abyssal Plains. Onwards!
