Welcome to Primal Survivors, a game that certainly implies and looks like it's a Vampire Survivors-like game. While it mainly is, the main difference here is that it isn't an auto-battler in the true sense. While you can go into Options and turn on Auto-Fire, you still need to aim no matter what, so it plays way more like a shmup. Not only that, but you move markedly slower while attacking. The game intends you to stop attacking in order to move faster to escape harm, but with Auto-Fire turned on, this isn't possible. As a result, you aren't able to do the same kind of dodging you would normally do in an auto-battler, once again making this play more like a shmup. There are still the usual upgrades to purchase between runs though, but in general this game is pretty watered down compared to others in the genre. Let's get started.
Abbreviated Walkthrough:
Your only choice from the start is to jump into a Primal Spirits mode run. You can start right with the Classic 15-minute setting to get more Bones (currency), while you'll need to unlock the second mode needed for achievements. You can choose whatever loadout you want, but I always went with the Bone for attack speed (since you're mainly fighting mobs). During the run, focus entirely on attack speed and damage (DPS, essentially) to keep the enemies at bay. Unlike all other auto-battlers I've played, the XP drops from enemies actually disappear in this one if you don't collect them quick enough, so you should always be going around getting them all. Thankfully, the pickup range is extremely large by default in this game. Also, as noted in the intro, you can turn on Auto-Fire in the options, but I don't recommend it. You can always just hold down
to fire. You'll also need to aim with
, so treat this more like a shmup game. Your only real goals for this run are to survive for 10 minutes (of the 15 total you have) and get to level 15. Every other achievement tied to this mode will come naturally while you do that. You should reach level 15 before you've even survived for 10 minutes, and then after 10 minutes, feel free to continue on to earn more Bones. Don't worry if you don't reach or defeat the final boss at 15 minutes; there aren't any achievements tied to doing so. You want to target at least 100,000 Bones though, because that's how much you need to unlock the next mode.
Depending on how many Bones you earned during that run, you should now be able to choose Cursed Spirits mode from the main menu and spend Bones to unlock one of the game options to do a run in this mode. The scaling of earning Bones is insane. In the first 5-10 minutes of a run you're likely to earn tens of thousands. However, the final five minutes sees you earning hundreds of thousands. I finished a 15-minute run with nearly 2,000,000 Bones, which was enough to buy essentially everything in the game. First, spend 100,000 to unlock one of the load out options in Cursed Spirits mode, then go into Upgrades and spend the rest there on whatever you want. I went with damage and attack speed on the second tab, and maxed out everything I wanted based on weapons I usually pick (wind and poison).
In Cursed Spirits, you are given a curse depending on your load out, and it's shown at the bottom of the screen. I choose the second load out option, which has a curse of only giving you two options per level up, rather than three. No real impact to gameplay, so it was an easy one. You will need to choose the Classic 15-minute mode just like above, because this time there is an achievement tied to the final gorilla boss, and he isn't available during the 10-minute run. Everything else is the same with this game mode, so play it and beat the wasp boss at 5 minutes for an achievement, then the gorilla boss at the end for the only other achievement in this mode.
The only achievement you should have left is for dying 10 times. You'll need to die 15 times for an achievement in the title update below, but you can quickly grind that out at the start of any run since you die in three hits. You can make it quicker by buying and equipping the upgrade that lowers your HP by 2 for an increase in damage. Now you'll die in one hit. Quickly grind that out to wrap up this short completion.
This title update adds five new achievements and no new content. All of the achievements are cumulative, and tiered versions of existing base game achievements. Basically, kill enemies and die. If you're coming into this game after the title update was added, all achievements related to killing enemies will unlock during your first run, around 6-7 minutes into it. You'll then need to grind out deaths, which is quick and easy to do over and over, as described above. That'll wrap up this very short title update.
Conclusion:
Primal Survivors is sadly a very disappointing entry in a very fun and addictive genre. The weapon variety is pretty bad, the choices when leveling up aren't very interesting until you get way farther into a run, there aren't any synergies or evolutions to look forward to, and the movement is so slow that it's painful. Thankfully the completion is quick and easy, since that's the main reason people will likely play this game.
