Nexon Games has confirmed that The First Descendant has exceeded the 10 million player count within its first week. The free-to-play looter-shooter launched on 2nd July, and has drawn a fair bit of controversy, mostly due to its aggressive microtransactions and accusations of plagiarism.
“We've reached 10 million Descendants in just 7 days! Thank you all for your tremendous support and love,” Nexon posted to X/Twitter. “It means everything to us. We will do our best to bring you great experiences. Can't wait to continue this journey together!”
Despite its success, The First Descendant has been under scrutiny due to a report by Forbes that claims Nexon Games uses ‘barely changed’ icons from Destiny 2, and even features weapons and gadgets that resemble those found in Bungie's MMO shooter. Other criticisms levelled at the game state that it lifts heavily from Warframe, too.
Nexon has since responded to those claims, stating that The First Descendant was created with a “deep affection and respect for other games in the genre”, crediting Destiny 2 as inspiration. “Destiny 2, being a globally renowned looter shooter game, is also personally admired and respected by the team, and it has served as an inspiration during the development process,” Nexon said in a statement to IGN.
The studio adds that it will be implementing changes. “We have taken the concerns raised seriously and decided to make adjustments to ensure that the imagery that may appear similar clearly reflects the unique identity of our game. We will continue to improve the game for fans of the looter shooter genre.”
The First Descendant is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC.
