Later this month, we'll be blasting off into the far reaches of space for a bout of exploration amid The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment's sci-fi Fallout-inspired action RPG, sporting lasers, electro cannons, a wealth of dialogue options, branching narrative bits, and a dark sense of humour.

While we had some extensive hands-on time with the game (check out our impressions here), we also had the opportunity to talk with Senior Narrative Designer Carrie Patel, discussing other inspirations besides Fallout (Obsidian being the folks behind Fallout: New Vegas, of course), life under Microsoft, and whether the studio would ever be interested in going back to 2010 spy RPG Alpha Protocol.

For some insights into The Outer Worlds ahead of its launch for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on 25th October, hit up our interview below.

  • Loved Alpha Protocol. Port it, remake it. Yes. Wished it would've made the cut for backwards compatibility.
  • Same here. Alpha Protocol was a game I went into blind and I loved it. Glad to hear it being brought up again, definitely would play a sequel or remaster.
  • Never got to play Alpha Protocol... Still have the disc somewhere but never got the time to start it. About Outer Worlds, I'm really hyped ! And playing it with game pass on release is even better :)
  • The only things I didn't like about Alpha Protocol, were the gun play and the weird twerk your character did while sneaking. Other than that a really nice interactive story RPG with a modern day spy/espionage twist that was such a good twist to the RPG world, as its mostly filled with the classic medieval fantasy or the futuristic space age worlds, which are fun but a bit overdone.
