Introduction:

In Agatha Christie: The ABC Murders, you take on the role of the great Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. This point-and-click detective adventure finds you in London up against once of your most difficult cases.

Someone is committing murders along the southern coast of England. As you investigate these seemingly unrelated crimes, you begin to uncover evidence that they somehow might all connected, but how? Using your wit and intelligence, you form deductions based on the clues you’ve examined to help you deduce who the murderer may be. You gather profiles of each person related to or involved with the victims based on what they reveal when you observe them and how they react to your questions. Your mind is tested solving puzzles and answering questions based on all the information you’ve collected. Can you find the murdered before they strike again?!

Step 1 - Playthrough One:

This game requires two playthroughs. With the advent of the Xbox One, you can no longer back up your saves onto a USB and use that to load a previous point in the game. And since there is no manual saving in this game, you can’t go back if you make a mistake or want to make a different choice. As a consequence of this, there are many achievements that are missable, which are noted below and in the guide’s descriptions. It is recommended that you use one or both of the walkthroughs linked above as there are a lot of dialogue choices. If you select the wrong one, there is no going back and you may miss out on obtaining an achievement.

It is recommended that you unlock all of the missable achievements bullet-listed below in your first playthrough so you don’t have to worry about them in your second, thus making it a quicker playthrough. Of course, you are free to play the game however you want!

Missable Achievements:

  • Eagle’s eye” - you must observe Franklin Clarke before Thora Grey during your first visit to Churston
  • Four-leaf clover”, “Snowflake”, “Cesium-133 crystal” - there are three opportunities to tidy up
  • Small donkey”, “Medium donkey” - for making one and four mistakes in your inquiries
  • Purring pussy”, “Cleaning pussy” - for taking the time to relax and looking in all the mirrors in the game
  • Newspaper”, “Stone” - for reading about yourself in the newspaper
  • Dali moustache” - during your questioning in Andover, you must make Mary Drover cry
  • Black dragon” - observe everything in the lounge during your first visit to Churston before completing the cupboard puzzle (which unlocks “Samurai moustache”)
  • Dragon’s smoke” - for selecting dialogue that accuses Thora Grey of ‘using black magic’

There comes a point in the game where you are speaking to a character named Dick Donbar on the telephone. This is where the game branches and the choices you make will unlock different sets of achievements. You should stick with the decision you make at this point in the game if 1) you want the full 1000:1gs:, and 2) you want to only do two playthroughs.

It is recommended that you unlock “Small donkey” and “Medium donkey” along with all the other missable achievements and choose ‘Branch 1’ in your first playthrough. That way, when you go through your second playthrough, you don’t have to worry about any missables or making any mistakes.

Branch 1 - “Black swan”/“Large donkey”:

  • When speaking to Dick Donbar on the phone, tell him that Mr. Cust is dangerous. This will unlock “Black swan”. This will also count towards “Large donkey” and be your 7th mistake.
  • While questioning Mr. Cust, if you relieve his coughing fit with a bottle of medicine you took from his room, you will unlock “Red cross” (missable).
  • In your room after questioning Mr. Cust, you will retrieve a revolver from a cupboard. There are two types of bullets’ blanks and real bullets. Loading the revolver with the real bullets will be your 8th mistake and unlock “Large donkey”.

Branch 2 - “Sheriff moustache”/“Incense burner”/“Gandhi moustache”:

  • When speaking to Dick Donbar on the phone, ask him to just keep an eye on Mr. Cust. This will unlock “Sheriff moustache”.
  • While questioning Mr. Cust, if you relieve his coughing fit with a bottle of medicine you took from his room, you will unlock “Red cross” (missable).
  • Back in your room after questioning Mr. Cust is a new newspaper on the table for you to read that will unlock “Incense burner”.
  • After you unlock “Incense burner”, walk over to a cupboard which will reveal a revolver and bullets. Load the gun with the blanks to unlock “Gandhi moustache”.

Step 2 - Playthrough Two:

Depending on which branch you went with in your first playthrough will determine what you need to do in your second. Note that if you went with ‘Branch 2’ first, then you’re going to have to make all the mistakes detailed in “Small donkey” and “Medium donkey” if you want to unlock “Large donkey”.

Conclusion:

Similar to the Sherlock Holmes games, if you like investigative murder mysteries that test your mind with deductions and puzzles, then this game is for you.

Finish the Andover inquiry.

Story related and cannot be missed. After completing the Andover investigation and reconstructing the murder in the tobacco shop, you and Arthur Hastings return to Whitehaven Mansions. After a brief conversation with Arthur in your apartment, the achievement will unlock.

Unmask the murderer.

Story related and cannot be missed. Towards the end of the game, after questioning Mr. Cust and returning to Whitehaven Mansions, there will be another group meeting. At the end of this meeting, the murderer will be revealed and the achievement will unlock.

Finish an observation.

Observations occur when you focus on a person, object(s) in a room or outdoor/indoor scenery and select all possible points of interest. For these achievements, you must observe everyone and everything in the game. It is recommended that when you enter a new scene or room, move the :1rs: to look around to search for a :1y: prompt. That will tell you if there is something to observe or interact with. Also, if and when you return to a previous scene, repeat this process. If you have already observed/interacted with the object(s) or person(s), Poirot will make a comment as such.

Note: Not everything you interact with will be considered an observation, but so you don’t miss out on unlocking “Eagle’s eye”, look at everyone and everything and press :1y: if given the option.

When you have pressed :1y: and initiated an observation, the screen will zoom in on the object or person and the word “Observation” will appear on the screen. On the left, it will show you how many points of interest need to be detected to complete the observation (e.g., ‘0/3’). When you are close to a spot, the controller will vibrate, the circle on the screen will turn green and the image will turn dark around the edges and zoom in slightly. When all the spots have been identified, the observation is complete and the word “Success!” will appear on the screen.

------

Story related and cannot be missed. You can unlock this achievement at the very beginning of the game. When you first have control of Poirot in Andover, walk up to the man in the yellow suit (Chief Inspector Japp) and press :1a: to speak to him. As the dialogue continues, Poirot will ask Japp what time the victim was murdered, to which Japp responds “let me just check”. At that point, the conversation pauses so move the :1rs: to hover over Japp and press :1y: to observe him (if you press :1a: instead, he will comment that he will be with you in a few moments, so this is not missable).

Using the :1rs:, focus on his hat (hat tipped), his smile (slight smile) and his right hand/chest (relaxed attitude). Once you have made all three observations, the achievement will unlock.

Refer to “Eagle’s eye” for more information.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3907/112303-lo.jpg Falcon's eye 10:gsicon:

Finish half of the observations.

The earliest you can unlock this is while inquiring about the murder of Betty Barnard in Bexhill. If you do not unlock this at this point, you have missed an observation and cannot unlock “Eagle's eye” in this playthrough.

During your exploration, the investigation will take him to her house. There you will be greeted by her sister, Megan Barnard. While you are at this location, you will first observe then question Miss Barnard. Then you will make your way upstairs to Betty’s bedroom and inspect it (there are observations here you must do). When you come back downstairs, walk over to the gramophone and solve the puzzle to play Betty Barnard’s record (to unlock “Double gear”). From there, the conversation with Megan Barnard will continue briefly.

When you have control of Poirot again, first make sure you use the mirror above the fireplace to earn credit towards “Cleaning pussy”. Then walk over to the sitting area where Miss Barnard is waiting, move the :1rs: to hover over her and press :1y: to observe her for a second time. Focus on her eyes (brimming with tears), the photo frame she is holding and her left hand (no wedding ring). When you have successfully completed the observation, provided you have completed all the observations up to this point, the achievement will unlock.

Refer to “Eagle’s eye” for more information.

Finish all the observations

*MISSABLE*

The final observation in the game is of Alexander Bonaparte Cust in Scotland Yard. Before you question him, move the :1rs: to hover over him and press :1y: to observe him. Focus on his glasses (lowered eyes), collar (crumpled jacket) and left hand (shaking hands). When you have successfully completed the observation, provided you have completed all other observations, the achievement will unlock.

http://www.xboxachievements.com/images/achievements/3907/112305-lo.jpg Neuron 5:gsicon:

Answer a little grey cells question.

Poirot refers to his brain as his “little grey cells”, which is basically his deduction board. Throughout your investigations, you will be able to piece together clues from observations and inquiries to determine who the murderer may be. There are approximately 50 little grey cells questions in the game. To finish the story, you must complete all of them, which is why the achievements related to the little grey cells are not missable.

Story related and cannot be missed. You can unlock this early on in the game. At some point during your investigation in the tobacco shop in Andover, Poirot will say “let us now try and get our little grey cells to work…”. This will open up any questions that can be answered as a result of the clues you’ve collected. Alternately, you can press :1up: and select the bottom circle (looks like an ink splat). These are your little grey cells questions.

At this point there should be one to three questions available. If you manually accessed your questions, press :1a: to select one. Then use :1ls: to determine which clue(s) best relates to the question. Press a corresponding button to place it above (it does not matter which clue goes with which button).

If you select all the clues correctly, green lines will connect the clues to Poirot’s profile image on the right and it will glow green. If one or more are incorrect, the green lines do not appear, so there is really no way to incorrectly answer the question; just keep trying until everything is correct. Completing any one of these will unlock this achievement.

How do we explain the presence of an ABC guide on the counter?

  • Correct Clue: No railway guide for sale in the tobacco shop.
  • Correct Clue: There are no fingerprints on the guide.
  • Correct Clue: Letter signed ABC announcing the Andover murder.

Is theft the motive for the crime?

  • Correct Clue: The till is untouched and is full of money.
  • Correct Clue: No objects of value for sale in this shop.

Was Mrs Ascher killed on site?

  • Correct Clue: A pool of blood near her head.
  • Correct Clue: No other marks on the floor.

Refer to “Cortex” for more information.

Answer half of the little grey cells questions.

Story related and cannot be missed. If you have answered all the questions up to this point, this will unlock in Bexhill after you enter the Ginger Cat and speak to Donald Fraser. These questions will open automatically at the end of the conversation (you do not have to press :1up: and select the circle in the bottom right corner of the screen).

Did Donald have a motive for Betty's murder?

  • Correct Clue: Betty used to go out a great deal.
  • Correct Clue: Donald was a violent man.

Does Donald have an alibi?

  • Correct Clue: Donald does not have an alibi.

Does Donald have a motive for all the murders?

  • Correct Clue: The two murders were premeditated and were carried out by the same murderer

Refer to “Cortex” for more information.

Answer all the little grey cells questions.

Note: The description to this achievement is misleading. Although there as many as 50 little grey cells questions in the game (for which you must complete them all to finish the game), this achievement will unlock when you have completed approximately 35 of them.

Story related and cannot be missed. If you have answered all the questions up to this point, this will unlock at the end of the Churston chapter when you have returned to Whitehaven Mansions the second time. After you compare the final ABC letter to the previous one at his desk, you will need to piece together, decipher and read four burned documents (the ones that you retrieved from the garden in Clarke’s mansion in Churston). The pieces are lying on the table under the mirror in the entryway of your apartment. When you have completed this task, this question will open automatically (you do not have to press :1up: and select the circle in the bottom right corner of the screen).

Where do the burned documents come from?

  • Correct Clue: Mrs Ascher's name is visible on the burned documents.
  • Correct Clue: Sir Carmichael Clarke's medical records have been consulted recently.
  • Correct Clue: All the victims suffered from throat afflictions

Finish an inquiry.

An inquiry is when you speak with or question a potential witness or suspect with dialogue choices. Since you must speak with everyone in the game at some point, the achievements related to inquiries are not missable.

Story related and cannot be missed. This achievement unlocks after you speak with the owner of the fruit and vegetable stand, Nancy Bodley, for the first time after exiting the tobacco shop in Andover. Note that the dialogue choices during this inquiry do not have any effect on the outcome of the game.

Refer to “Gothic confessional” for more information.

Story related and cannot be missed. After you leave Betty’s house in Bexhill and returns to the Ginger Cat, you will be able to speak to Donald Fraser (the dialogue choices of this inquiry do not have any effect on the outcome of the game). After you have finished questioning him, he will briefly speak with Chief Inspector Japp. When that conversation concludes, the achievement will unlock.

Finish all the inquiries.

Story related and cannot be missed. Towards the end of the game, you arrive at the Marbury Guest House to inspect A. B. Cust’s room. When you have completed that, you have a conversation with Chief Inspector Japp in the lobby. After the conversation, take a taxi to Scotland Yard.

The next scene will be in an interrogation room with A.B. Cust sitting at a table. Make sure that you observe him before questioning him to count towards “Eagle’s eye”. Press :1a: to begin questioning Mr. Cust.

During your questioning, select the following dialogue choices:

  • “Present yourself”
  • “Talk about the letters”
  • “Acknowledge his innocence”
  • “Admit that you do not believe he is a murderer”
  • “Get him to talk about the army”
  • “Get him to believe he is innocent”
  • “Ask him if he acknowledges going to the three towns”
  • “It proves that you wrote them”

When you have selected the last dialogue choice and Mr. Cust responds, the achievement will unlock. Also, when Mr. Cust is speaking for this last time, he will have a coughing fit. You can unlock “Red cross” here if you give him the brown Sedative bottle.

*MISSABLE*

While investigating the murder of Betty Barnard in Bexhill, you come to a point in the game where you are inspecting her bedroom. On the left side of the room there is a dresser, and on top of the dresser is a clock. Press :1y: to interact with it. When the puzzle begins, press :1lt: to zoom in on the clock face. Then, move :1rs: to the hour hand, hold :1lt: and move the :1rs: clockwise until it says 12:00. The achievement will unlock when Poirot says “there, that’s better”.

*MISSABLE*

While you are in Whitehaven Mansions before leaving for Churston, There will be many tasks to complete. One of them will be to reorganize your suitcase.

After receiving a letter from ABC and calling Scotland Yard to inform them of the potential murder in Churston, walk over to Arthur Hastings in the sitting area who is packing your suitcase. Press :1a: to speak to him and scold him for messily packing your suitcase. When given a dialogue choice, select “Point out that order is essential”. Arthur defers and lets Poirot pack his own suitcase.

When the screen zooms in to the contents of the suitcase, you must make five observations; unprotected bottles (lower right), odd socks (below the bottles), badly closed toothpaste (upper right), badly folded pyjamas (middle) and a bath towel (lower left).

When you are finished, Arthur informs you that he’s consulted the ABC guide for the correct time your train leaves for Churston. When that conversation concludes, the achievement will unlock.

*MISSABLE*

At one point during your second inquiry in Churston while you are searching the mansion, you will exit the lounge and emerge in the garden. Here Poirot will comment about a bad smell. Walk along the path but do not go down the stairs. Keep walking and on the right you will notice a flowerbed that is out of place. Press :1y: to zoom in on it.

First, observe the brown pellets near dead rat on the left. Then, click on the misaligned flowerbed. The scene will change as if Poirot pushed the flowerbed into place. Once he does that and makes the comment “There, that’s better! It is symmetrical!”, the achievement will unlock.

Make a mistake

*MISSABLE*

In Andover, after you speak with Nancy Bodrey in front of the fruit and vegetable stand, Chief Inspector Japp informs you that Mrs. Ascher’s niece, Mary Drower, is in the tobacco shop bedroom. Return to the tobacco shop and reenter the bedroom at the back of the shop where Miss Drower is sitting at the table.

Note: Before you speak to Miss Drower, press :1y: to observe her for credit towards “Eagle’s eye”. If you press :1a: instead, Poirot will just introduce himself, so this observation is not missable.

When speaking with Miss Drower, the results of the conversation do not have any bearing on the outcome of the game with the exception of possibly not earning ego points. With that said, press :1a: to speak with Miss Drower and choose the following dialogue choices:

  • “Demand that she stops crying”
  • “Deduce that the inheritance is for her”
  • “Accuse her of lying”

Once you have selected these three specific dialogue choices, Arthur Hastings enters the room and Poirot asks that the lady be escorted home, unlocking this achievement.

If you follow these steps precisely, you will also unlock “Dali moustache”. If you do not (and select gentler and understanding dialogue choices), you will have missed out on unlocking “Dali moustache” and you also cannot unlock “Large donkey” as this interaction counts as the first of the 8 mistakes you can make in the game.

Refer to “Large donkey” for more information.

Make four mistakes.

*MISSABLE*

This will unlock after you have made four mistakes in your inquiries. The earliest you can unlock this is during your first inquiry with Thora Grey.

During your first inquiry in Churston, you are sitting around a table with Arthur Hastings, Franklin Clarke and Thora Grey. Miss Grey will excuse herself to tend to Mrs. Clarke and you will be able to speak with Franklin Clarke. When the inquiry concludes, Franklin leaves and you are free to inspect the lounge.

Note: Make sure you inspect the cupboard to the left of the fireplace last (which unlocks “Samurai moustache”). Thora Grey returns after you complete that puzzle, so if you inspect that before inspecting the rest of the room, you will not be able to unlock “Black dragon”.

When you have finished, Thora Grey returns. During your questioning, select the following dialogue choices:

  • “Ask if he (Sir Carmichael) gave her gifts”
  • “Mention the brooch”
  • “Ask if the gift annoyed Lady Clarke”
  • “Indicate that the dragon is frightening to Lady Clarke” (this is to unlock “Dragon’s smoke” later on in the game)
  • “Ask her for her version of the facts”
  • “Ask the reasons for her aversion to Franklin”

After you have reconstructed the Churston crime, provided you have made three mistakes previously, the achievement will unlock. You will also unlock “Secret heart” at the beginning of the next scene in Whitehaven Mansions.

Refer to “Large donkey” for more information.

Solve a riddle.

Riddles are puzzles you have to solve in order to obtain an object to use later or to further the story. Riddles are determined in the game when you focus on an object and the word “Thinking…” appears on the screen. Since you have to solve them all in the game, any achievements related to riddles are not missable.

Story related and cannot be missed. The first riddle available in the game is the cash register in the tobacco shop in Andover. While you are searching the tobacco shop, you will notice a cash register sitting on the counter. Press :1x: to zoom in on it. Use the :1ls: to observe the register from every angle, :1lt: to zoom in and interact when the hand icon appears and :1b: to zoom out.

Looking at the front of the register, focus on the ‘Open’ button with the :1rs: and press :1lt:. Poirot will comment that something is preventing the drawer from opening. From there, rotate to the left side and you will see a switch. Focus on it and press :1lt: to zoom in. The switch is a locking mechanism for the drawer. Hold :1lt: and move the :1rs: to the left to unlock the drawer. Note the writing below the switch (‘-5-’).

Rotate to the front-right side of the register and press :1lt: to zoom in. Note the writing here (‘8--’).

Looking at the front of the register again, focus on the ‘Open’ button and press :1lt:. The drawer will now open and right in the middle you will see the writing ‘--2’ in one of the compartments. When you press :1lt: on it Poirot will say “something is hidden underneath”. The puzzle here is you have to press the correct numbers above to open the compartment.

Press :1b: to zoom out of the drawer and press :1lt: to zoom back into the number keys. Using the :1rs: to move, press :1lt: on the 8, 5 and 2 keys (in that order) and the compartment in the drawer will open to reveal a door key to the back of the shop. Focus on it and press :1lt: to take it and the achievement will unlock.

Solve half the riddles.

Story related and cannot be missed. This riddle involves the gramophone in Betty Barnard’s house in Bexhill.

While you are inspecting Betty’s bedroom, there is a bedside table with a lamp on the left side. Sitting on the table is a bottle of medicine and a box which holds a key. The key is necessary for opening the cabinet beneath the gramophone. Poirot automatically takes it.

When you have completed inspecting Betty’s bedroom and are back downstairs, to the left of the entryway is a gramophone sitting on a cabinet. Press :1x: to zoom in to start the riddle. Press :1lt: to zoom in to the cabinet door. On the left hand side is a lock. Press :1left: and select the key. Press :1a: to Use the key, focus on the lock and press :1x:. The door will open revealing a record album (which you automatically take) and sheet music.

Press :1b: twice to zoom out. Rotate the cabinet to the left and you will see a latch towards the top of the cabinet. Press :1lt: on the latch and it will open a drawer revealing a handle. Press :1lt: to take it. Underneath where the handle was resting is a secret compartment. Press :1lt: to open the door and it will contain a puzzle with four gold rectangles. To solve it, you have to find the correct notes. The correct solution is in the image below.

http://i.imgur.com/b16Qd1J.jpg

Once you have the correct combination, Poirot will comment that he heard the sound of a mechanism being triggered. Press :1b: to zoom out and you will see that below the drawer on the right a small door opened. Focus on it and press :1lt: to zoom in. Holding :1lt: and using the :1rs:, change the combination to ‘78T’. You will hear another mechanism being triggered.

Press :1b: to zoom out once again. Rotate to the front of the cabinet and press :1lt: to zoom in on the switch below the turntable. Focus on it and press :1lt:. You will see the arm move up so you can place the record. Press :1left: and select the record, focus on the turntable and press :1x: to place it. Focus on the switch again and press :1lt: again to lower the arm.

Press :1b: once more to zoom out and rotate to the right. On the turntable stand is a hole. Press :1lt: to zoom in, press :1left: and select the handle and press :1x: to place it. Hold :1lt: and use :1rs: to crank the handle clockwise. Once you hear a click, focus on the button in the corner of the turntable stand and press :1lt: to press it. The record will play. When the scene changes to Poirot speaking with Megan Barnard, the achievement will unlock.

Read a newspaper that criticises you.

*MISSABLE*

After conducting your second interview with Thora Grey in Whitehaven Mansions, there is a short conversation between you and Arthur Hastings. Then Poirot consults his little grey cells to answer questions about Miss Grey. When you have completed that, the conversation will continue and once again Poirot will call upon his little grey cells (unlocking “Thor’s hammer”).

Once that is done, your next objective will be to call Chief Inspector Japp. Before you do that, walk over to the small round table next to the sofa where sits a stack of newspapers. Press :1y: to zoom in and :1y: again to read each of them. When you finish reading the story in the “Daily Blague”, the achievement will unlock.

Read the latest newspaper.

*MISSABLE*

Note: This achievement will only unlock if you read a newspaper that compliments you when it previously criticized you (refer to “Stone”). To ensure this, while speaking to Dick Donbar on the telephone, do not select dialogue choices that cause him to have a heart attack. You should have previously unlocked “Sheriff moustache” during your playthrough if you want to unlock this (refer to that achievement for the correct dialogue choices). If you happened to unlock “Black swan” instead, then you cannot unlock this achievement in your current playthrough.

After you have returned to Whitehaven Mansions after questioning Mr. Cust, you and Arthur Hastings have a conversation and Poirot suggests that Arthur keep a revolver in his pocket. When you have control of Poirot, before retrieving your revolver, walk over to the small round table next to the sofa and read both newspapers (press :1y: to zoom in and :1y: again to read each of them). The achievement will unlock after you read the top newspaper, “The Daily Flicker”.

Story related and cannot be missed. After questioning Lady Clarke in Churston for second time, she falls asleep. Poirot makes a comment that the telephone is ringing, so go back downstairs. Have discussed porcelain with Thora Grey.

Story related and cannot be missed. This is unlocked during your first inquiry in Churston. When Thora Grey returns from attending to Lady Clarke, Poirot makes a comment about the porcelain on the table. Miss Grey picks up Sir Carmichael’s catalogue to look it up. As she is doing this you have an opportunity to observe her (to count towards “Eagle’s eye”). When that observation concludes, she will have found the entry. She and Poirot finish the conversation about the porcelain and the achievement will unlock.

Have opened the secret cupboard of Sir Carmichael's secretary.

Story related and cannot be missed. When you first arrive in Churston, after visiting the scene of the crime, you will have a conversation with Franklin Clarke in the mansion’s lounge. When that inquiry concludes, while you are waiting for Thora Grey to return, your objective will be to inspect the lounge.

Note: Remember to inspect the entire lounge before focusing on the cupboard as there are three instances where you inspect a dragon which counts towards “Black dragon”. If you inspect the cupboard before them, Miss Grey returns and you will have missed your opportunity.

In the top left corner of the lounge is a cupboard. When you focus on it and press :1y: it will zoom in. On the shelf you will see a circular puzzle with four smaller circles around it, each with a different animal; a crane, a dragon, a turtle and a tiger. If you had inspected the table first, you will see that these animals match the ones that are found on the dishes around the table. The darker center circle is an Emperor, same as the center of the table.

The object of this is to rotate the smaller circles so they are in the correct pattern and facing the correct way and then have the correct colored discs underneath them (the book to the right of the puzzle shows the correct color pattern).

To rotate the smaller circles, focus on the darker center circle and hold :1lt: and move the :1rs: to turn them so they rest on top of the colored discs. Note that the crane should be on top and the turtle on the bottom (if they are in the correct position, Poirot will make a comment that the position of each motif is correct). Notice that each of the smaller circles has a dot on it. Rotate the smaller circles (holding :1lt: and moving the :1rs:) so that the dots are closest to the darker center circle.

Once that is completed, there are four pegs in the top and bottom corners of the circle. Rotating them will change the colored discs underneath the smaller circles. There are two colored discs under each smaller circle. You will need to rotate these pegs so the correct colors are underneath the smaller circles (red for the top circle, blue for the left, tan for the right and brown for the bottom). When the colors are all in the correct position, Poirot says “I think I heard a bang. Could it be this cupboard?

The camera will pan down to the now-unlocked door at the bottom of the cupboard. When you press :1lt: to interact with the door, the achievement will unlock.

This counts towards “Quadruple gear”.

A drawer will open up revealing your revolver and two boxes of bullets. The red box contains real bullets and the green box has blanks in it. For this achievement, you must give Arthur Hastings the revolver loaded with the blanks.

Have saved Donbar's life over the telephone.

*MISSABLE*

Note: You can potentially unlock either this achievement or “Black swan” (and potentially “Large donkey”) in one playthrough; you can’t unlock both.

After the Churston investigation, you are back at Whitehaven Mansions. After a short time you get a call from Chief Inspector Japp. When you are given a dialogue choice for either Japp or Poirot to call the owner of the Black Swan, Dick Dudley Donbar, you must choose to call him yourself. If you encourage Japp to call, both the telephone call and scene will end and you will not be able to unlock this achievement, “Black swan” or “Large donkey”.

Once you call the Black Swan, select the following dialogue choices:

  • “Ask to speak to Donbar”
  • “Ask if he has heard about the investigation”
  • “Put the danger into perspective. Cust is only a suspect”
  • “Ask him to keep an eye on him”

If you follow these steps precisely, you will unlock this achievement. If at any time you mention that Cust is a killer or dangerous, you will unlock “Black swan” instead (which counts towards “Large donkey” [this is the 7th mistake]).

If you follow these steps precisely, you will also unlock “Small donkey”. If you do not (and select gentler and understanding dialogue choices), you will not unlock this achievement and you cannot unlock “Large donkey” as this counts as the first of the 8 mistakes you can make in the game.

  • “Say that he’s a killer”
  • “Warn him that Cust is dangerous”

If you follow these steps precisely, you will unlock this achievement. This will also count towards “Large donkey” (this is the 7th mistake). If you downplay the situation and tell Donbar that Cust is just a suspect and to keep an eye on him, you will unlock “Sheriff moustache” instead.

*MISSABLE*

This is only missable because during your first visit to Churston, it is possible to miss items in the lounge (namely the dragon dish and teapot on the table and the ceramic statuette on the table next to the door) before you inspect the cupboard (left of fireplace). After you inspect that, Miss Grey returns to the room and you can no longer inspect any items.

There are 6 dragons in Clarke’s mansion. For completion’s sake, I have listed all the dragons found in the mansion with the reason being that the achievement unlocks when you inspect Thora Grey’s brooch sitting on the table in the lounge during your second visit to Churston.

  • Teapot on the table in the lounge (during first visit to Churston)
  • Plate on the table in the lounge (during first visit to Churston)

  • “Mention the brooch”
  • “Ask if the gift annoyed Lady Clarke”
  • “Indicate that the dragon is frightening to Lady Clarke”
  • “Ask her for her version of the facts”
  • “Ask the reasons for her aversions to Franklin” (this unlocks “Secret heart” at the beginning of the next scene [which also counts towards “Large donkey”]).

The second part involves speaking with Thora Grey again in Whitehaven Mansions after you return from Churston the second time (and after you speak with Donald Fraser). Select these dialogue choices:

  • “Remind her that she did not see anyone the day of the murder”
  • “Ask whether she resigned of her own free will”
  • “Say that the objects presented a risk”
  • “Say that the curse of the dragon is on her”

After Miss Grey leaves, you will have a brief conversation with Arthur Hastings. When Poirot calls upon his little grey cells, the achievement will unlock.

The next scene will be in an interrogation room with Mr. Cust sitting at a table. Make sure that you observe him before questioning him to count towards “Eagle’s eye” (this is the last observation in the game so if you have completed all the other observations, the achievement will unlock). Press :1a: to begin questioning Mr. Cust.

During your questioning, select the following dialogue choices:

  • “Get him to talk about the army”
  • “Get him to believe he is innocent”
  • “Ask him if he acknowledges going to the three towns”

  • Correct Clue: Donald was very much in love with Betty.
  • Correct Clue: Donald does not kill Megan in his dream.
  • Correct Clue: Donald really likes Megan.

After Poirot explains the meaning of the dream, the achievement will unlock.

Hey thanks for the guide. Brutal details.

But I really want to know is that if I follow the game pressure walkthru, will that pop all achievements?

Thanks! It went through a lot of revisions before I posted.

It will but you still have to do two playthroughs regardless (well, 1 and 3/4 playthroughs). The reason being is that on the Xbox One you cannot back up your saves at all (for some stupid, asinine reason). Plus the game saves automatically. If you could back up, then this could all be done in one playthrough by reloading a previous save at certain parts of the story. I will detail everything when I finish the roadmap this week. Sorry it's taking so long; this is a very specific guide.

In the first playthrough you can get everything plus "Large donkey" OR "Gandhi moustache"/"Sheriff moustache"/"Incense burner", then in the second playthrough you should unlock the one(s) you didn't unlock in the first playthrough. For me personally, I unlocked "Large donkey" first then the other three in my second playthrough.

If you don't mind spoilers (I tried to make the guide as spoiler free as possible), I would suggest skimming through both the guide and walkthrough before you play so you have an idea of what unlocks where and what you need to do. Unfortunately, I am not going to rearrange the achievements in the order in which they unlock simply because I don't want to go through the trouble of rearranging them back to the original order when I submit the guide. I recommend copying and pasting into a Word document and rearranging there.

I was thinking about doing a walkthrough for the game as well but I think the gamepressure guide is suitable. It helped me (along with the video guides for visual aid), so I don't think yet another walkthrough is necessary. Stay tuned!

I am going to do that for my 2nd run. I am missing about 6 achievements, so I need to figure out where and what I need to do

Ah thanks for the guide, I have just done my 2nd run through using the guide linked to and got everything apart from the Black Smoke one, the guide had the question to Thora listed slightly different to what i had on screen regarding the broach, so i missed it.

Can i be arsed to play it a 3rd time! I suppose this time I don't need to observe anything.

You mean "Black Dragon" or "Dragon's Smoke"? What was the question that was different? I made sure that I wrote down my choices before selecting one but let me know and I will look into it!

Not to say you did, but is it possible you chose a different dialogue branch but you still ended up in the same spot so the question was slightly different?

It was black smoke

The idea is to get her to admit that the brooch scares lady clarke but the options are "why not wear the brooch" OR "does it annoy lady Clarke" - so does it annoy may be the same as scare but it wasn't 100% clear from the guide i was reading.

Ah, elsewhere it does say Choose the ANNOY option, then you get the frightened question. So i shall do that.

and thats 2 hours and 25 minutes of my life I won't get back :D Yes, you have to choose ANNOY and then you get the bit about scaring.

Though apperrently I could have saved a bit of time and used the 2nd file again and then it would have unlocked at the 1st questioning, as it remembered I'd asked the right questions at the 2nd stage anyway.

Total playtime around 10 hours - 5 hours for first run through with no guidance, 3 hours for one to get Large donkey and all observations, 2 1/2 for this last one (which I could have done the 2nd time if i tried harder).

Right, for "Dragon's Smoke", my guide does say you have to select the 'annoy' dialogue. I just looked through the linked Gamepressure guide and it does also say 'annoy' (the section is quoted below) but it is written in a way that can be misinterpreted. However, it does not say at that point in that guide that choosing 'annoy' would lead to 'frightened'. I can see how you may have chosen something differently if reading from that guide and not mine.

During the conversation with Miss Grey ask if she doesn't feel uncomfortable working for old man (1 ego point) or ask if Sir Carmichael gave her gifts and then mention her medallion (3 ego points) or mention her brooch (1 ego point). In this last case ask why Thora doesn't wear her brooch (1 ego point) or ask if the gift annoyed Lady Clarke (3 ego points) and if she is jealous (3 ego points). Ask for Thora's version of the facts (1 ego point). Next ask what she thinks about Franklin (1 ego point) or ask if she is in a relationship with Franklin (3 ego points). Then accuse her of kissing Franklin (1 ego point) or ask for confirmation that she kissed Franklin (3 ego points).
When I wrote my guide, I wrote down every dialogue choice to make sure it was accurate and the one that needed to be selected.

I also studied the video walkthrough to make sure that when selecting one dialogue, it branched correctly.

The game took me 15 hours 40 minutes, but I'd say at least 3 hours of that was paused while writing the guide as I was playing.

Have accused Thora Grey of black magic.

*MISSABLE*

When first speaking with Thora Grey in the lounge in Clarke’s mansion in Churston, select the following dialogue choices:

  • “Ask if he (Sir Carmichael) gave her gifts”
  • “Mention the brooch”
  • “Ask if the gift annoyed Lady Clarke”
  • “Indicate that the dragon is frightening to Lady Clarke”
  • “Ask her for her version of the facts”
  • “Ask the reasons for her aversions to Franklin” (this unlocks “Secret heart” at the beginning of the next scene [which also counts towards “Large donkey”]).

The second part...

yes all true. I was using the game pressure guide to ensure i had 100% observations and got confused at that point. Hard following 2 guides at once so my fault!

I was following both the videos and the Gamepressure guide and writing this guide all at the same time. I would read Gamepressure's ahead to make sure I did everything right, then watch the video to triple check. I didn't want to do another playthrough but found out it's unavoidable. Luckily I knew how to do everything since I had just played it so the second playthrough was a breeze.

Glad you finished the game! :)

So, following the written guide will get you most achievements in first playthrough. Which ones will it miss? Is there then another 'hold your hand' guide to mop up the remaining achievements?

Well that's great. While trying to maximise ego points, I miss the Dali moustache achievement. What should i be going for? Is there limited ego points?

Is there an actual proper walkthrough?

There is both a written walkthrough and a video walkthrough posted in the roadmap. My apologies for not having finished the roadmap yet, but all the missable achievements are listed in the roadmap and are noted in which playthrough you should try to unlock them in.

Ego Points have nothing to do with anything. You get them by making choices in your investigations but they aren't achievement related so it doesn't matter how many or how little you get. What matters are the dialogue choices that you make, which are detailed in this guide.

For "Dali moustache", that counts for that one achievement and it also counts towards "Large donkey". I don't see how it could have been missed if you read through this guide.

If you follow this guide, you should unlock everything before the end of your second playthrough. I suggest reading through it and reading the posted walkthrough first so you get a feel of what to do (you might even want to skim through the videos). Obviously there are spoilers, but if you're reading this guide, they are unavoidable.
