No Introduction:Prepare for the award-winning RPG experience in this definitive edition of Persona 5 Royal, featuring a treasure trove of downloadable content included! Forced to transfer to a high school in Tokyo, the protagonist has a strange dream. “You truly are a prisoner of fate. In the near future, ruin awaits you.” With the goal of “rehabilitation” looming overhead, he must save others from distorted desires by donning the mask of a Phantom Thief.
Step 1 - Follow a Walkthrough:Now here me out... this game is awesome, but the achievements are a pain. There are so many different choices you can make on each day in the game, and each one will likely move the time of day or even transition you to the next calendar day. Progressing time is one of your enemies in trying to do everything necessary. I'll be honest, I don't think getting the completion here would be possible without a guide. I personally used
this one which is very brief and only outlines the exact steps needed (I stuck to the "Normal Route" choices). There is also
this one which goes into a ton of extra steps and details to get what they consider "100% completion" which goes above and beyond what is required for the achievements themselves.
One of the biggest pitfalls to watch out for is gaining access to the new third semester added in the "Royal" version of the game. To do this, you must get the Councilor confidant to Rank 9 before November 17th. You will then want to follow the steps to get the "True Ending" outlined in
The Path Chosen (60G) below. I will say that once you have maxed out your social stats (Knowledge, Guts, etc) you can begin skipping parts of the walkthrough and either just doing things that interest you, or going to sleep to speed through the days. Even ranking up most of your confidants is not really necessary, but does help you in battle so it's worth doing.
The other thing you'll want to take note of as you play is the large amount of optional achievements for doing various things during battle, social activities in towns, fusing personas in specific ways, capturing a treasure demon, doing things inside the Mementos, etc. Most of this is outlined in the walkthroughs, but not everything. Pay attention to the achievement list to know what to aim for! At one point, after the maid cafe opened in late August, I just made a save and did all the social things not mentioned in the walkthrough to get some achievements, then reverted my save and continued to follow it.
Step 2 - NG+ (if needed):If you somehow missed something in the above step, which could only happen if you were rushing through the walkthrough or didn't use one at all, you'll be able to start a new game with the same save data after completing the story and carry over pretty much everything (social stats, personas, equipment, money, etc) which will allow you to complete the game a second time and focus on the things you may still need to do.
Conclusion:Persona 5 Royal is a weird, wonderful marvel of a game. It blends traditional JRPG combat and dungeons with a life simulator that really has some great moments in story-telling. It's not for the faint of heart, and certainly not an easy completion for those who don't like to follow walkthroughs and find their own way, but I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Just watch out for the penis monsters and devils on toilets... like I said, it's a weird game.
