Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that Alan Wake 2 has sold 1.3 million copies, making it the studio's fastest-selling game to date. By the end of December 2023, the game had cleared 1 million units, and has since added another 300,000 copies to its tally. That's a considerably better performance than Remedy's last game, Control, but the game apparently has yet to turn a profit.
“By comparison, Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months,” Remedy noted, confirming that Control has sold more than 4 million copies since it launched in 2019.
“A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well,” the developer added. ”We will continue promoting and supporting Alan Wake 2 and are creating two paid DLCs that will expand the story. We are also releasing updates and carrying out other activities to support the game and its community.”
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala also noted that Alan Wake 2's success has had a positive knock-on effect for its other projects, with staff moving over to work on Control 2, its Max Payne 1 & 2 remake, and multiplayer project, Condor. "The successful launch of Alan Wake 2 has supported our other game projects,” said Virtala.
“Condor, Control 2 and Max Payne 1 & 2 remake have all increased development pace thanks to the personnel released from Alan Wake 2, and we expect these projects to reach their next development stages during the first half of 2024,” he added.
Alan Wake 2 is available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
