NoIntroduction:Here comes Capcom’s newest challenger! Street Fighter 6 launches worldwide on June 2nd, 2023 and represents the next evolution of the series. Powered by Capcom’s proprietary RE ENGINE, the Street Fighter 6 experience spans across three distinct game modes featuring World Tour, Fighting Ground and Battle Hub.
World Tour:There are three distinct game modes in SF6, and the first one I would suggest starting with is the only reason this game was on my radar at all. As an RPG afficianado and someone who hasn't played a fighting game since Soul Calibur 4 in 2008, I was surprised when this starting getting some buzz in the RPG community. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the World Tour mode is basically Yakuza: Like a Dragon except the battles are your classic Street Fighter bouts. The rest of it - the leveling, gear, even the feel of the quests, enemies, and city - they are all fully-fledged wacky JRPG.
Unfortunately, this mode is just a 200 Gamerscore add-on to the base 1000 Gamerscore list (though included with the purchase of the base game), so you'll actually be spending the most time here for the least reward. You need to complete the World Tour story (red icons on the map are main quests), at least 22 side-quests (blue icons), and then max out a bond with one of the master trainers. It's all very straight-forward, just a bit time-consuming. Most fights can be won by spamming assisted combos or ranged special moves. This step will take 15-20 hours.
Fighting Ground:This mode is where you'll learn to actually play the game properly, which will be sorely needed for the last mode. You will need to complete arcade mode once, do a few tutorials and training modes, and complete at least 45 trials (you can just do the easiest three trials for each character). You also need to play 100 online matches through the fighting ground, though you don't need to win any of them. This will be great practice for the tournament matches you need to win in the next step though. Find a character you're comfortable with while you do the 100 matches and learn some of their moves and combos.
Battle Hub:This mode is the basic online matchmaking for the game. It is set up like a nightclub/arcade for display purposes, but essentially this is where you'll choose to play online matches, tournaments, avatar battles, and interact with other players to make friends, give likes, etc. It's all very straightforward and you can boost some of it with friends. If you do it all legit, it could take up to 20 hours, much less if you can boost any of it.
The biggest annoyance of this piece by far is the tournaments. They only run 2-3 times per week, and it's not that easy to set up boosting sessions for them, and even if you do get only two people entered into a specific tournament, that only leaves two wins for one person and one win for the other, so it will take multiple tournaments to get the ten wins required for the achievement. See the achievement description below for more info.
Conclusion:Well, I certainly didn't expect to ever write a Street Fighter guide, but here we are. I don't think I've played this franchise since Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES, but the new RPG World Tour mode drew me in and I'm pretty thankful it did. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy that mode, the rest of the modes were enjoyable as well. The franchise has certainly come a long way since the 90's! If you're not a fan of the fighting genre at all, this certainly won't be for you, but if you're even mildly okay with that AND an RPG fan, I'd highly suggest at least giving World Tour mode a shot. For a completionist, there's a bunch more of pure fighting stuff to get through, but it's not that bad.
