- Offline: 38 [1000gs.png]
- Online: 0
- Approximate amount of time to 1000gs.png: 15-20 hours [Estimated Time to 100%]
- Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 2+ possible partial playthroughs
- Missable achievements: 18
- Does difficulty affect achievements:  No, you can play on Easy, if you like.
- Unobtainable/glitched achievements: 3 [and 1 that doesn't work properly]: You Can’t Keep Me Out! (15G) doesn't unlock upon opening all doors and safes; Radical Acceptance (35G) and One of the Thousand Young (35G) are bugged, as the objective you need to complete fails to trigger; and Teetotaller (60G) can only be completed with Edward (despite the same mechanics for this achievement working across both characters, which makes no sense as to why it would only unlock when you play as Edward).

Introduction:
Alone in the Dark is a remake of the cult classic 1992 survival horror, and it stars David Harbour as Edward Carnby and Jodie Comer as Emily Hartwood. In it, you'll return to the original game's Derceto Manor, in a Southern Gothic storyline that stirs in Lovecraftian weirdness and a menagerie of lumpen monsters. There are some neat puzzles to figure out, a bit of clunky combat to contend with, and a fair bit of exploration to be done, especially if you want to gather all of the game's lagniappes (collectibles).

You'll need to complete at least two playthroughs, using the first one to methodically gather every collectible, so you can use the second as your speedrun playthrough for I Don’t Got All Night (30G) achievement, potentially combined with the Teetotaller (60G) achievement. This involves completing the story without necking booze from your flask to heal, which can be tricky, even at Easy difficulty.

A bit janky it might be, but there's some fun to be had in Alone in the Dark, if you're able to look beyond the game's various bugs and other issues. Despite some glitched achievements, this is an otherwise straightforward completion, especially with a bit of tactical saving (you have ten manual save slots available to you). Alone in the Dark isn't the best horror game out there, but try to enjoy yourself, yeah?

Step 1 - Complete the story and collect all of the lagniappes, clues, locked doors, etc.:
Ideally, your first playthrough should be taken at a leisurely pace, taking your time to track down every lagniappe collectible; unlocking every door, lock, and safe; finding every clue; and completing every additional dialogue with NPCs. It doesn't matter which difficulty you play at, or which character you choose to tackle the story with initially. Making a save at the beginning of Chapter 4 is also a good idea, as you can then use certain completed lagniappe sets to unlock alternate endings, earning several additional achievement in the process. There's also a bug causing lagniappe collectibles to be lost upon completing the game, so being able to go back and reload a save is crucial.

During your first playthrough, you can potentially unlock the following achievements:

Welcome to Derceto (15G)
The Thin Veneer of Civilization (15G)
Whatever It Takes (15G)
Come At Me! (15G)
Now You're On the Trolley! (15G)
On the Mend (15G)
In Between There Are Doors (15G)
Left Holding the Bag (15G)
Found and Lost (30G)
Somewhere Else Entirely (15G)
Drop Me Off In New Orleans (30G)
Losing My Mind (15G)
Where I Belong (15G)
I Abandoned Him (30G) or I Stole the Child and Let Him Drown (30G)
When Therapy Makes It Worse (15G)
The Past as a Present (15G)
Frenzy (15G)
Back to Normal (30G)
Case Closed (60G) or Safe and Sound (60G)
Don’t Mind If I Do (15G)
Watch Out Where You’re Waving That Thing (15G)
Bonfire Night (15G)
Hard Boiled (15G)
Gangster (15G)
An Honest Day’s Work (15G)

Step 2 - Complete a second playthrough as the character you haven't played as yet, mopping up any collectibles only available as that character:
If you played first as Emily, play as Edward for your second playthrough, and vice versa. You'll need to complete more optional dialogues for the Chatterbox (30G) achievement, and you can attempt to nab the I Don’t Got All Night (30G) and Teetotaller (60G) achievement while you're at it, playing on Easy. This might be a little tight, however, so you may require a third playthrough. You can also make judicious use of manual saves to make your life easier.

This should step should unlock:
Chatterbox (30G)
Nobody Knows What Happened (35G)
What Just Happened? (35G)
Radical Acceptance (35G)
One of the Thousand Young (35G)
You Can’t Keep Me Out! (15G) *GLITCHED*
Look At All the Free Stuff I Got! (60G)
Librarian (30G)

Step 3 - Load up your Chapter 4 save to unlock alternate endings if you haven't already, final mop-up:
I
f you've yet to unlock the alternate endings using completed lagniappe sets, you can do that now. And, should your attempts at Teetotaller (60G) and I Don’t Got All Night (30G) have fallen short, a third playthrough might be in order. Hopefully, this shouldn't take you too long, as you should have Derceto Manor and its puzzles fairly well mapped out in your head at this point. Get everything done, and you'll earn the Alone in the Dark (65G) achievement. Phew.

Conclusion:
Alone in the Dark is a fairly easy completion, albeit one hampered by bugs and a handful of glitched achievements. Keeping hold of a manual save at the opening of Chapter 4 will alleviate a lot of headaches, as you can always load it up and unlock the game's extra endings, providing you have the requisite lagniappe sets. Happy hunting!

There are 38 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • All Achievements

You'll earn this upon completing the other 37 achievements on Alone in the Dark's list. Nice work!
  • Break through a barrier

Immediately after killing two monsters during your time at The Hateful Mound in Chapter 2, you'll be presented with a barrier. Simply smash it up by swinging any melee weapon (there's a shovel and a hatchet nearby, so take your pick), and Robert's your father's brother.

  • Kill a monster with an opportunity

Opportunities tend to be scattered all over areas in which you'll fight monsters and are usually Molotov cocktails. To use an opportunity, you need to hold down rt.png, aim, then let go to chuck it. Wait for the crosshair to lock on and grow larger on an enemy before you hurl a bottle, and all being well, you'll set your target alight, and they'll eventually die, unlocking this in the process.

  • Kill a monster with a melee weapon

When you visit The Hateful Mound in Chapter 2, your search for the bridge lever will bring you to an area where you'll drop back down to where you came from. Before you drop down, be sure to grab the pipe leaning against the blue oil drum. You'll then immediately encounter a monster – thrash the living crap out of it with the pipe, hammering rb.png, to unlock this.

  • Kill a monster with a ranged weapon

As soon as you arrive at the French Quarter during Chapter 1, you'll see two monsters casually hanging out. Pop either one of them (preferably both, to be sure) using Edward's standard issue revolver or Emily's handgun, and you'll earn this.
  • Finish a Lagniappe set

Lagniappes are Alone in the Dark's collectibles. We found that the 'Lost Children' set was the first to unlock, comprising the Rubber Stamp, Fountain Pen, and Dog Collar, which, in turn unlocks the shotgun cabinet. Find all three items to obtain this.

    • Rubber Stamp – You'll find this on the reception counter by the bell in the Reception room off the Stair Hall during Chapter 2.
    • Fountain Pen – Upstairs in Derceto Manor, on the table near the fan in Room #5 (Batiste's Room).
    • Dog Collar – After leaving The Hateful Mound during Chapter 2, you'll wake up next to Jeremy's Bag. Inside is a palette knife which you can use on the door to the Drawing Room. Opposite the door is a table by the window – on the shelf under the tabletop, you'll find this.
  • Kill an enemy with fire

To do this, use one of the Molotov bottles you can throw as a distraction, and lob it right at an enemy. If you manage to execute this correctly, the monster you've aimed it at should go up in flames – make sure the circular reticule is large and locked to the enemy before you let go of the projectile.

  • Kill an enemy with shotgun

Once you've unlocked the shotgun cabinet, wait until you encounter a vanilla enemy, preferably alone, then wait for them to stagger into close range. Line up a shot to the head, and this should unlock for you, no sweat.

  • Open all of the safes and locks in the game

    *GLITCHED*

There are 30 locks and safes in total, and some aren't entirely obvious. Just be sure to consult your map for locked doors, and be sure to unlock them when the opportunity presents itself. You should encounter every safe on the critical path as you play through the game, but locked and barricaded doors are a little trickier. Keep your eyes peeled.

This is glitched as unlocking all doors and safes simply doesn't earn the achievement.
  • Find all the lagniappes

There are fifteen sets of three lagniappes (Alone in the Dark's collectibles) to track down, some of which can only be found during a playthrough as Edward or Emily – this means you'll need to go through the game with each character. Do yourself a favour and play the game with the 'Modern' setting on - trinkets will be accompanied by a little button prompt, making them far easier to find.

  • Finish the game without drinking from your flask

*PARTIALLY GLITCHED* (can only be completed as Edward)

Pressing dpad-up.png on the d-pad will see your chosen character downing a swig of booze to top up their health, so if you want to earn this, stay the hell away from the dpad-up.png button. Should you accidentally neck a shot, stop and reload your save. Be sure to use button-b.png to dodge enemy attacks, and if you can avoid combat altogether, that'll prove helpful too (press button-y.png to sneak). You can also complete the game early by giving Grace the 'All the World's a Stage' lagniappes set, ending the game without needing to fight the final boss, which is handy. It also goes without saying that you should attempt this at Easy difficulty.

  • Read all the clues

There are 56 clues across Emily and Edward's playthroughs, and not all of them are easy to find – some are very missable. The best advice I can give is to scour every location thoroughly and play with the Modern settings turned on to better highlight items, making collectibles easier to spot.

Secret achievements

  • Put a talisman socket back together

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

During Chapter 2, you'll need to find the pieces to a talisman hidden inside a clock up on the landing in Derceto Manor. Once you've found the plates, rotate them into the correct place to complete the talisman, and this will unlock.

  • Finish the game in 3 hours or less

This is best attempted at Easy difficulty, as ammo is more plentiful and monsters are weaker. Skip cutscenes (as these count towards your time) and try to spend as little time possible backtracking or messing around. It might be a little tight, but it's very doable, especially if you manage to solve puzzles nice and quickly. You could even combine this with the Teetotaller (60G) achievement if you're feeling brave. If you get stuck on a boss or puzzle for too long, pause the game, load up an autosave, and try again. Also, bear in mind that if you pause the game, the clock will still be ticking.

  • Play for more than 8 hours

You can either do this during the space of a very leisurely single playthrough, or spread it over two (or more). This is incredibly simple, of course – just play for eight hours. You can just leave the game running if you want.

  • Break into Derceto

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

You'll get this early on, having gone round the back, through the conservatory, and into the house. Simple.

  • Find your own talisman

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

During Chapter 1, you'll enter a Seance Parlour in the French Quarter, where you'll find a talisman on the table. Pick it up and you'll earn this.

  • Find Jeremy’s bag

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

You'll find Jeremy's bag on the floor of the Small Parlor room upon returning from The Hateful Mound during Chapter 2. Pick it up to receive a bunch of useful items, and this achievement.

  • Talk to Jeremy in the chapel

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

After making it through the cemetery and acquiring all three medallions to unlock the door to the chapel, you'll have a chinwag with Jeremy. Once the cutscene has played out, this will unlock.

  • Find the Convent of Taroella

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

You'll unlock this right at the beginning of Chapter 3, after a relatively short cutscene, chatting with Juan in a sun-dappled courtyard.

  • Escape the Dark Man

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

That was a close Juan. Once you've evaded the Dark Man in the Convent's library, taken the lift to safety, and enjoyed another cutscene, this will unlock for you.

  • Walk into the desert

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

After talking to Jeremy in the theatre room, you'll need to solve a puzzle that opens a narrow passage through a sarcophagus. Run down the corridor and you'll come out into the desert, greeted by this achievement.

  • Return to Derceto

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

After leaving the desert tomb, having lined up all the lasers and lenses, you'll start Chapter 4, waking up in Derceto with a new objective to tackle. Shortly after receiving a new document following a cutscene, this will unlock.

  • Own up to your awful past

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

This will be unlocked during your playthrough as Emily Hartwood, upon learning about a terrible chapter from her past.

  • Own up to your awful past

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

You'll get this while playing through Edward Carnby's storyline, after you've revisited a traumatic event from your past in the bayou during Chapter 4.

  • Break through the barriers of self-deceit

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

This unlocks when you've freed the steamboat in Chapter 4, and returned to Doctor Gray.

  • Get what you want

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

I'm not sure why this unlocks at the point that it does, but for me this unlocked upon entering Doctor Gray's Apartment in Chapter 4 and talking to Emily while playing as Edward.

  • Frenzy

    15

    Enter hell

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

This unlocks as soon as you enter the snowy tundra, via the closet in Doctor Gray's Apartment during Chapter 4.

  • Break the Pact with the Dark Man

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

After a pitiful boss battle at the top of the snowy peak at the end of Chapter 4, having entered the ruins, a cutscene will play, and once that's finished, this will unlock.

  • Save New Orleans from the Black Goat

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

This is awarded upon defeating the Black Goat boss at the end of the game with Edward Carnby. Well done! You made it through the Alone in the Dark remake.

  • Save New Orleans from the Black Goat

    Story-related. Cannot be missed.

You'll nab this upon completing the story with Emily Hartwood, defeating the irritating boss at the end of the game. Congrats. You've finished Alone in the Dark.

  • Aim your gun at a human being

Achievements don't get much simpler than this. Simply raise your weapon with lt.png and point it a human character. Any one you like.

  • Give Grace a present

This is unlocked during Chapter 5 and requires all three items in the 'All the World's a Stage' lagniappes set. Talking to Grace will earn this alternate ending, and you can do it as either Edward or Emily.

  • Consider ending it all

Again, this requires a completed set of lagniappes. Collect all three items in 'The Hartwood Curse' lagniappes set, then interact with the noose in the Derceto Manor Attic during Chapter 4 to earn this secret cutscene and this achievement. You can do this as Emily or Edward.

  • Submit to the Dark Man

    *GLITCHED*

You'll need all three items in the 'Dying with Dignity' lagniappes set for this. If you have the full set, you can scrub the paint off Jeremy's portrait as Emily during Chapter 4. After opening the hidden passage through the closet in Doctor Gray's Apartment, you'll be presented with the option to wipe the paint away, earning the chance to then submit to the Dark Man, and unlock this.

This is currently glitched, as the objective required to submit to the Dark Man fails to trigger.
  • *GLITCHED*

This is another secret sequence that requires more lagniappes. This time you need to the 'A Goat Without Horns' set, then, as Edward you can head into the Conservatory to make an offering to the gigantic whispering tree. Give the offering and the tree will call to you, bagging you this for your efforts.

Like Radical Acceptance (35G), the required objective for this is currently failing to trigger correctly.
  • Kill an enemy with Tommy gun

“Oh yeah. Now we're talking”. Once you've made it inside the Pregzt Shipping Company Warehouse during Chapter 3, head up to the office, and you'll find a Tommy gun lying on a sideboard. Pick it up, use it on an enemy, kill it, and hey presto.

  • Talk to everybody about everything

At certain junctures a prompt will appear to continue talking to someone. There aren't all that many instances of this, but when you do carry on chatting, there are normally three dialogue exchanges, the last one of which is normally your character saying that you should go. Just keep an eye out for the speech bubble prompt when it pops up and go through the chatter until it's time to sod off.
