Introduction:
Welcome to Dead End City, the most recent shoot-em-up game from eastasiasoft. While they may be known for putting out fast and easy completions, many of which are fun simple shmup games, this one definitely does not fall into that category. You play as a car shooting through various waves of enemies in a very Mad Max-inspired game. If Mad Max was a top-down shmup, it'd be this game. There are actually three modes as well as numerous extras to unlock, but for this completion you just need to complete Arcade mode and grind out some achievements. Easier said than done though, as Arcade mode is quite challenging and you only get one life, no continues! Let's get started.

Abbreviated Walkthrough:
Like basically all of eastasiasoft's shmup games, go ahead and jump right in. However, make a pit stop at the How To Play section just to notice that, in addition to holding down button-a.png to shoot, you can press button-b.png to use your special attack. Your special attack ammo is shown in the lower right corner when you play. Read through the other tabs to see how combos works, points, fuel, etc. The other thing to be aware of is that you are definitely going to fail at beating the game multiple times, unlike their other shmup games by this developer. This game's levels are pretty challenging, and with the basic car you start with, the first level will feel fine, but you'll immediately notice your inability to readily take down enemies in the second level. So, your goal at first is to just get used to the game, practice, but also aim for points. At the end of each run, points are converted to money, which you can spend in the Extras menu. You're targeting new cars, because that's really the only way you have a chance at beating Arcade mode. Specifically, you're almost assuredly going to need the second available car in the Extras menu, for 30,000. You can either save up for it straight away, or spend your first 10,000 on the first available car, use it to get farther more consistently in Arcade mode to get more points/money per run, making saving up for 30k quicker. Personally, that's what I did and what I recommend doing. With the second car, I was consistently able to get to the last level and often the last boss. The importance of that is being able to get practice in on the other levels and bosses, because like all shmups, knowing where enemies will spawn from and what attacks they and bosses do is huge for improving your performance. Then, once you save up 30k for the third car (second available in the shop), the first few levels will feel like a breeze in comparison, and you'll have a good shot at beating the final boss since you're likely much more familiar with the patterns and attacks.

As for the gameplay itself, it's tough, but there are some things to be aware of, as well as some tips:

  • Your fuel is your health, and like any vehicle, your fuel drains over time. It's slow, but it still has an impact. This means you constantly need to be grabbing the drops from defeated enemies, but it also means that drops happen pretty frequently to prevent you from running out of fuel, meaning health drops are plentiful but you need to actually grab them
  • Also on the topic of fuel, when your fuel is full, you are strongest. You shoot faster and more bullets, and this is especially true with other vehicles you buy. As a result, you want to try to stay at full fuel as much as possible
  • Points and combos are good for getting money to spend, but they have no impact on the actual gameplay during a run. Your combo meter is how you get more points, but it's also how you get medals (needed for many achievements). The only way to get medals is to build your combo meter up to x9 first, and then kill enemies and they'll drop medals. This is needed for achievements, and combo/points/medals means more money to spend between runs, but you shouldn't be sacrificing health or taking damage for any of this, because there is no impact on the current run from any of these things
  • Each level has two many types of enemies that come in: ones across the top of the screen, and ones that come in from the side. The latter type will either drive around in circles and then drive off permanently, or they'll drive up and join the ones at the top of the screen. It's best to stay at the bottom of the screen the entire time so you don't get hit by one of these circling vehicles. Try to destroy them, but an enemy leaving the screen has no negative impact to you (it's just slightly less points at the end of a wave, but it doesn't even cause you to lose your combo)
  • Bosses should be handled like shmup bosses in any game: focus entirely on dodging projectiles, and let the damage happen to them incidentally while you're dodging. In other words, you'll unavoidably hit them while dodging projectiles. Your main focus needs to always be on what the boss is throwing at you and how best to avoid it, rather than ensuring you stay locked on to its weak spot
There isn't a whole lot more to say here. Practice, grind out money, buy a better car, and you'll improve. You'll see gradual improvements from practice, and then step change improvements from buying a new car. The second car (first available in the shop) shoots two guns when at full fuel instead of one, and the third car (second in the shop) shoots a focused two guns at full fuel but like the second car's full fuel when you aren't full, as well as shooting much faster. If you get the third car in the shop, for 50,000, that one shoots three shots at full fuel. When you buy these, you'll notice you immediately start tearing through groups of enemies faster. So that, coupled with the practice you have, will make it easier to get through each level. You still need to be good at dodging boss attacks though, and that's where the practice during the grinding comes in. Once you beat Arcade mode for the first time, the hardest stuff is done and you can just focus on grinding. Refer to the Title Update for that.

Title Update DLC

Unlike the base game, this title update is more in line with what you'd expect from an eastasiasoft title update. Basically, higher levels of cumulative achievements from the base game: you need to get more medals and kill more enemies, and that's basically it. There's also an achievement for buying five items from the shop, but that will unlock naturally with beating the Arcade mode in the base game. Refer to the guide for tips on grinding out each achievement, wrapping up this title update. Personally, I unlocked all title update achievements by the time I beat Arcade mode, and I think that'll likely be the case with many people considering how challenging the Arcade mode is.

Conclusion:
Dead End City is way more challenging than other eastasiasoft games, especially their shmup games, but it's actually pretty fun, with a challenge that's relatively enjoyable rather than unfair. Unless you're really good at shmup games, expect to have to grind out some money to buy better cars, and at that point you should be set up for success far better. Beating the Arcade mode is the only tough part of the completion, but keep at it and you'll eventually succeed. Hopefully you powered through the game, and if so, congrats on the completion!

  • Build up the score multiplier to x9.

Your score multiplier builds up for every shot you land on an enemy when your fuel is full. It isn't affected by time (such as hitting no enemies for some time) nor is it affected by enemies you miss/don't kill who drive off screen. The only thing that can reset your score multiplier is getting hit. Getting hit by a bullet cuts your multiplier in half, and running into a car reduces it by one. So, you basically just need to hit tons of enemies without getting hit yourself until your score multiplier builds up to x9.

You'll likely find that this is your first achievement. Focus entirely on dodging enemy fire since that's the only thing that can end your combo, and there are plenty of enemies in the first few waves of the first level to easily reach x9. If you kill all enemies in a wave (which is very easy to do on all waves of the first level), that also gives you a significant boost to your score multiplier (sometimes as much as +2). So, if you kill all enemies in the first three or so waves without getting hit, you'll be at x9 easily.

Another thing that'll help and definitely happen is that, when you defeat a boss, you can still shoot them while they're exploding to drastically boost your score multiplier. I found I could easily go up +3 or +4 just while the boss is exploding, making it really easy to either reach x9 there or do so in the first wave after the boss fight.

Here's a clip of me getting up to x9 in the beginning of the game.

The Arcade mode is split up into five levels, and they all progress the same way: you'll fight seven waves of enemies, then you'll go into a village/town/encampment-type area with lots of enemies on foot and many more bullets to dodge, and then you'll exit and fight the boss.

The first seven waves, in general, work the same way on every level. Refer to the roadmap for general gameplay tips, but here are some summarized:

    • In general, stay at the bottom of the screen. This is not only to maximize the time you have to dodge bullets coming from the enemies on top, but also to ensure you don't run into one of the vehicles driving in circles that show up routinely
    • Focus entirely on dodging bullets rather than on destroying enemies. There is no real penalty other than points for not killing enemies. It's more important to avoid taking damage
    • Speaking of points, they do nothing during a run, so don't focus on them. Yes, they translate to money after a run to buy stuff, but they shouldn't be your focus if you're trying to win
    • Always use your special attack on bosses to ensure they don't drag on too long
    • You have more firepower if your fuel is full. Therefore, in addition to focusing on dodging enemy attacks, make it a point to grab the fuel drops that fall out of most enemies. Maintaining full fuel is essential to tearing through enemies and helps immensely with bosses
    • Practice. Learn enemy patterns and boss attack patterns. That's how basically every shmup works, and this one is no different. Seeing and getting used to enemy (and especially boss) attack patterns is crucial to avoiding damage so you survive long enough to beat them
    • Enemies on foot in the encampments can be run over without losing health (unlike when you touch other cars), so keep that in mind
Even with that in mind, you're still going to die a bunch. The vehicle you start with isn't great, and you're unlikely to get past the second or third level with it. As discussed in the roadmap, getting new vehicles is crucial to beating Arcade mode. The first car you can buy, for 10,000 coins, shoots two guns instead of one when at full fuel. The second car you can buy, for 30,000 coins, has a default attack like the previous car's full fuel attack, and shoots a fast concentrated double shot which is great for bosses. The second car also has a far better special than the first. The third vehicle in the shop, for 50,000, shoots a triple shot at full fuel, making it even easier to take down enemies and bosses. So, while it is definitely possible to beat the game with the first car (first car you can buy; second on the vehicle selection menu), it will be challenging to beat the final boss. The second car available to buy for 30,000 is ideal. That's a lot of money though. So, your options are either to keep playing with the starting car until you save up 30,000, or save up 10,000 and buy the first car, then use that to build up 30,000 for the next car. I recommend this latter approach, as it makes it far more likely you'll get to the last level or even the last boss with the first car you can buy, giving you invaluable experience with the bosses and enemies on those levels. Then, when you buy the next car for 30,000, you should be in a way better position to beat the game now that you know what to expect from every level and every boss. If you still can't beat the game with that car, continue trying and amassing money for the next car at 50,000 and you'll have a triple shot, which again makes things easier. In general, bosses will be the main hurdle though.

    Here are some boss tips.

    • First boss - stick to one side and destroy both guns. Then, safely cross to the other side after the middle cannon shoots and destroy both guns on that side. Then destroy the middle when it's safe, and take out the boss
    • Second boss - pretty straightforward. Just swing out to the sides to dodge bullets, but otherwise stay in the center and keep shooting it. When it starts the flamethrowers, just stay conservative and keep to one side to avoid them, then go in for some shots when it's safe
    • Third boss - top priority is destroying the drills on each far side of the boss. These make the rocks fall across the screen, and they do huge damage if they hit you, so eliminate them first. Then go for the guns on each side, then the middle section, and just be extremely careful. Keep an eye on the snowball(?) that shoots out of the center very quickly
    • Fourth boss - first phase is really simple. Keep shooting the fan, and when enemies come out, mow them down because they drop tons of fuel. Second phase, stick to one side and eliminate the guns there ASAP.. Then, just stay in the center shooting at the center gun. Its attack is really easy to avoid, and just swing out around the rockets
    • Final boss - first phase is pretty easy. Just listen for the audio cue of the chained arms shooting out at you, and never take any risks because they do a ton of damage. The second phase will feel like a nightmare. Bullets everywhere, and lasers that keep coming. Start by destroying the guns on the "inside" between the two lasers. There's one just to the right of the left laser, and just to the left of the right laser. You're relatively safe in the center, and it's pretty easy to dodge the bullets there. With both of those guns destroyed, carefully take out one laser by going in front when it's safe, then repeat on the other side. With both destroyed, the third phase starts with two enemies on each side and a large cannon in the center. Those enemies can make dodging everything a nightmare. Personally, I focused entirely on sweeping left and right, taking out enemies, and let the damage to the cannon happen naturally. With it destroyed, you enter the final phase, against the boss enemy. He jumps around and fires three volleys of a ton of bullets, but they're relatively easy to avoid as long as you make them your top priority, which is what you need to do. Focus entirely on the boss's bullets because they will annihilate you if you're caught by them. Let the damage to hit happen incidentally while you dodge bullets. Once you finish him off, you're done!
Lastly, here is a video courtesy of Sangriaz from The Hidden Levels showing a full successful run with the 30,000 car, same one I used. It's especially helpful to see the boss patterns in action.
  • Beat any boss without taking any damage.

As the description says, you need to beat any boss without taking damage. The first and second bosses are by far the most practical to do this on. The first boss really only is problematic during the very end of the fight. The beginning of the fight his projectiles are easy to dodge, and the guns on his vehicle are also easy to take down quick and dodge their bullets. It's only reall his volley of bullets at the end that could cause you to get hit, since they come fast. Once you know the pattern though, it's pretty simple to stay just off center, then weave back and forth to dodge them.

For the second boss, it's entirely gun fire and barrels in the center to avoid, so it's also pretty reasonable to do with a bit of practice. You can also make use of your special attacks to end the final phase quicker.

Don't worry if you don't do this on your first or even second attempt. The two things that'll make this easier are that you'll get tons of chances considering how many tries it'll take to beat Arcade mode, and you'll also buy better cars to make boss fights quicker and easier.
  • Score 1,000,000 points in Arcade Mode with any car.

Points come from a handful of sources:

    • Destroying enemies
    • Score multiplier
    • Medals
    • End of wave bonuses
It's the medals and end of wave bonuses that will give you the biggest amount of points. To maximize points, you want to maintain a x9 score multiplier. While that may be obvious, the bigger reason to do it is you get a 20,000 points bonus at the end of every wave if you maintain x9 score multiplier throughout. With seven waves per level (not including the encampment wave, which is pretty tough to maintain your multiplier, and the boss, same thing), that's an extra 140,000 points per level just from that one end-wave bonus.

Medals, as noted in the roadmap, only drop from defeated enemies if you have a x9 multiplier, so that's another reason to keep it up. Medals give you tons of bonus points, totaling into the thousands or tens of thousands per wave as well, so you should grab them as much as possible.

Basically, the goal is to reach and maintain a x9 multiplier as long and often as possible. This will make 1,000,000 points relatively easy to achieve. To put it in perspective, my best run of the first level I had over 350,000 points just from the first level (but that was a full combo, meaning all enemies destroyed and not a single hit the entire time). More realistically is 200-250k on the first level. With all the runs you'll be doing to beat Arcade, you'll get many chances for this and a lot of practice. My best run I reached 1,000,000 points before even beating the boss of the third level. My worst, I reached 1,000,000 points in the encampment right before the final boss. So, I think by the time you beat Arcade mode, you'll virtually unavoidably reach 1,000,000 points.
  • Kill 1000 enemies.

Refer to Scorpio Hunter II (100G) for more information.
  • Kill 5000 enemies.

This is cumulative across all game modes and all attempts. Unless you are amazing at shmup games, you will almost assuredly unlock this achievement before beating Arcade mode for the first time.

If not, there isn't really any fast way to grind it out other than just continuing to do runs. I would say that the first and second levels are probably best to keep replaying, especially with better cars, since you can mow through enemies quickly. Things slow down a little bit in the third level with the armored cars, but for variety's sake during grinding, feel free to just play through the game from start to finish a couple more times.
  • Collect 100 gold medals.

Refer to Medal Collector II (100G) for more information.
  • Collect 1000 gold medals.

Medals (there are only gold ones, no other types) are only dropped by enemies if you defeat them while you're at a x9 score multiplier. You therefore need to get to full fuel so you can build your score multiplier while shooting enemies, and then maintain that multiplier while you destroy more enemies. Then, you still need to grab the medals they drop (although that'll likely happen often without trying).

I'm pretty positive that you'll unavoidably unlock this achievement well before finishing Arcade mode, considering how many tries that'll take. You'll likely notice that virtually all medals you get on a run are in the first level's waves, and possible some in the second level, just because those are the easiest enemies and waves to do without getting hit. Therefore, if you need to grind out medals, it's best to just replay the first level over and over to get medals and let yourself die on the second level so you can just replay the first.

DLC: Title Update

There are 5 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • Kill 6000 enemies.

Refer to Scorpio Hunter II (100G) in the base game for more information. My experience was that I unlocked both achievements in this title update before beating Arcade mode in the base game.
  • Kill 7000 enemies.

Refer to Scorpio Hunter II (100G) in the base game for more information. My experience was that I unlocked both achievements in this title update before beating Arcade mode in the base game.
  • Collect 1500 gold medals.

Refer to Medal Collector II (100G) for more information.
  • Collect 2000 gold medals.

Refer to Medal Collector II (100G) for more information.
  • Buy 5 items in the Black Market.

The Black Market, as it's called, is just the shop in the Extras menu. Despite needing to supposedly buy five things, you'll actually unlock this naturally while beating the Arcade mode for the base game. This is because beating a level "buys" the Score Attack version of that level in the shop (it doesn't cost you any money), and that counts toward this achievement. Therefore, beating all five levels in Arcade mode will "buy" five items from the shop. Note that you need to actually go into the shop for this achievement to unlock though.

Aside from that, you'll assuredly be buying at least the first two cars, for 10,000 and 30,000, to be able to beat Arcade mode. Other helpful purchases are the boss health bar and the player hit box, which are 5,000 each.
