Introduction:
“Two engines, one champion, no limits. Climb on, strap in, and experience the pure adrenaline-pumping excitement of the podracing sequence from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace!

Take the controls as Anakin Skywalker or any one of over 21 podracers and feel the full-force blast of two; negotiate through flaming methane lakes, Tusken Raider assaults, anti-gravity tunnels and much more in a pulse-pounding, do-or-die fight to the finish where anyone will do anything to cross the finish line. How far will you go?” - xbox.com

Originally released in 1999 on the Nintendo 64, Aspyr has remastered the original game with updated graphics, modernized controls and achievement support. Even if you haven’t played this game previously or aren’t a fan of Star Wars, this is a surprisingly decent racing game, albeit very bare bones compared to modern racers.

Achievement-wise, Star Wars: Episode I Racer tasks you with placing first in all 25 races, fully upgrading your pod to give you an advantage, unlocking racers, plus a variety of other simple requirements. There are two ways to play this game; the way it was intended or playing with Debug Mode on. Debug Mode is a developer exploit which allows you to change aspects of the game to make it much easier for the player. It is really only useful for placing first in every race with minimal effort, making most achievements a breeze to earn.

Debug Mode:
For those who wish to use debug mode, this section is for you. Debug mode is mainly useful for placing first in all 25 races, and thus winning the maximum amount of truguts and unlocking a number of other achievements.

Note: Debug Mode is only valid for the current game session. If you quit the game and play it at another time, you will need to go through these steps again.

To utilize the debug menu, you first need to enter a passcode. For this, you will be creating two players; one for the passcode and one you will actually be playing with. We will not be using the first player at all as cheats do disable achievements if used directly.

On the main menu, select ‘Tournament’. Then on the next screen, select the top empty player slot. Here is where you’ll enter the passcode. Holding lt.png, type the word ‘RRTANGENTABACUS’, pressing lb.png after each letter (do not press button-a.png). When that’s done, still holding lt.png, select and press lb.png. If done correctly, ‘OK’ will appear in the lower left corner of the screen.

Note that if you happen to press button-a.png by mistake, just press button-b.png to delete the letter.

Next, without exiting, to name this player slot, enter one or two letters then , pressing button-a.png after each. Select a character (doesn’t matter which), and when the race selection screen appears, press button-b.png twice to exit back out to the ‘Select Player’ screen. Your “cheat” is now set up.

Now that the debug menu is set up, we will be creating a player to use. Select the next empty player slot, and from there, enter a three-letter name, pressing button-a.png after each letter, then select ‘OK?’ to finalize. It will then move on to the character select screen, so choose any one you want. Next, select the highlighted race then on the next screen, in the lower left corner of the screen, change the ‘Winnings’ to ‘Winner Takes All’ to get the most truguts for winning the race.

With that set up, when you select ‘Start Race’, you can access the cheat menu to easily win each race in 20 to 30 seconds. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more details.

Walkthrough - First Place:
The first thing you want to concentrate on is placing first in all 25 races. You can start on any of the three circuits available (Invitational circuit needs to be unlocked). Once you’ve placed first in all the races, you will have unlocked a minimum of 15 achievements, including all locked pod racers.

Note: If you are using debug mode, you will place first in every race in a matter of 20 to 30 seconds.
After a few races, you should purchase all three pit droids so your parts can be repaired after each race (unlocking Serv-O-Droid, Inc. (35G)). As you win more, you should upgrade your parts as long as you can afford them (unlocking Mind tricks don’t work on me—only money (20G)). It’s best to concentrate on the Accelerate, Top Speed and Cooling categories. You can purchase these parts in the Junkyard at a cheaper price if you don’t have enough truguts. Refer to You came, you looked around, you bought (70G) for more information.

Walkthrough - Miscellaneous Mop Up:
With the first place, locked racer and parts achievements out of the way, now it is time to concentrate on the remaining achievements. At this point, using Debug Mode isn’t really beneficial to unlocking these achievements except for maybe using Invincibility Mode.

Chances are, when you were getting your first place wins, you also unlocked:
If not, you can work on them as you attempt other achievements. First, replay any race and choose Sebulba as your racer. There are two achievements to unlock playing as him, plus you can also attempt the mirrored track and two speed achievements:
Finally, start a race as Anakin, overheat your engines, and unlock:
 Conclusion:
For what it’s worth, Star Wars: Episode I Racer is a mediocre remaster at best. Aspyr basically cleaned up the graphics to make it playable on modern consoles and TVs. It is what it is. The game still retains the fast-paced racing and is a satisfying game for fans of old as well as new.

To earn The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G), you are required to finish each race in first place. There is a quick way to achieve this by using Debug Mode. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Complete Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit

This is available from the start. There are 7 races in this circuit. To unlock each subsequent race, you must place at least fourth in the previous race. For this achievement, you just need to complete each race.

To earn The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G), you are required to finish each race in first place. There is a quick way to achieve this by using Debug Mode. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Complete Galactic Podracing Circuit

This is available from the start. There are 7 races in this circuit. To unlock each subsequent race, you must place at least fourth in the previous race. For this achievement, you just need to complete each race.

To earn The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G), you are required to finish each race in first place. There is a quick way to achieve this by using Debug Mode. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.

Note: When you’ve completed the Amateur, Semi-Pro and Galactic Podracing circuits, the credits will roll. These are unskippable and last about 10 minutes. When they are over, if you haven’t done so previously, you need to complete the Invitational Podracing Circuit.
  • Complete Invitational Podracing Circuit

There are 4 races in this circuit. In order to unlock this circuit, you must have finished at least third in a previous circuit’s final race. Once you have done that, it’s just a matter of completing these 4 races to unlock the achievement. Note that the final race in this circuit, Inferno, is only unlocked by winning first place in the three previous races.

To earn The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G), you are required to finish each race in first place. There is a quick way to achieve this by using Debug Mode. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Finish your first race

Completing one race, no matter what place you finish, will unlock this achievement.
  • Reach 700 MPH

Refer to Kessel Run (70G) for more information.
  • Reach 1000 MPH

Note: Before attempting this achievement, you should purchase the best possible upgrades for your Accelerate and Top Speed statistics (you will need 34,000 truguts). Refer to You came, you looked around, you bought (70G) for more information.

Once you have purchased these upgrades, select any racer since they all have Top Speed maxed out (I used Neva Kee). There are a few tracks that have long straightaways to attempt this on, such as:

    • Vengeance in the Amateur Podracing Circuit
    • Spice Mine Run in the Amateur Podracing Circuit
    • Scrapper’s Run in the Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit
    • Bumby’s Breakers in the Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit
    • Executioner in the Galactic Podracing Circuit
    • Andobi Mountain Run in the Galactic Podracing Circuit
After starting the race, you may have to complete a lap to determine where the straightaway is. Once you find it, hold the 1LSUp.gif to max out your speed and then press button-a.png to boost when the circle is yellow (unlocking Woohoo (20G) if you don’t have it yet). If you are lucky enough not to crash or hit any obstacles along the straightaway, you should reach 700 MPH (for Light speed (20G)) and 1000 MPH with no issues.

If you fall short of the required speed or crash, just keep trying. I personally unlocked this racing on the Vengeance track about two-thirds of the way through the lap (a zero-gravity tunnel with big rocks).
  • Come in first place

Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Taunt your opponents

Press button-y.png during any race to taunt your opponents.
  • Set a new lap record

As long as you are consistent in your racing and not crashing or overheating, this should come naturally as you progress through the story. The easiest race to unlock this with is the Boonta Training Course in the Amateur Podracing Circuit.

Note: If using Debug Mode, this will unlock after completing the first lap in your first race. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Purchase your first upgrade

Refer to You came, you looked around, you bought (70G) for more information.
  • Complete a Boost Start

This can only be earned at the start of any race. As the timer counts down, the lap counter beam will change from red to orange to yellow to green. You need to press and hold rt.png (the accelerator) when the beam immediately turns green.

If you happen to press rt.png too early or too late, unlike various other kart racer games where you would normally spin out, you will just start the race like normal. If you time it just right, however, your racer will speed off and you will unlock the achievement.

Note: You have many opportunities to earn this, so don’t get discouraged. But, if you have having trouble unlocking this or just want to get it out of the way, you can always start a race over again.
  • Hit 10 enemies with Sebulba's weapon

Note: Sebulba’s flamethrower weapon is activated by pressing button-y.png. This shoots a flame out of the right side of his racer.

This is a cumulative achievement, so it doesn’t need to be done in one race. After you have unlocked Sebulba (refer to By far the favorite today (35G)), select him and then choose any race. Once it starts, immediately press button-y.png to use the weapon and it should hit a few racers. Continue on with the race, staying close to the other racers, and when you are near one or more, press button-y.png to spray them. If you happen to get ahead of everyone, just slow down or stop and allow them to pass. Continue this until the achievement unlocks.
  • Unlock "Bullseye" Baranta

“Bullseye” Baranta unlocks when you finish the Sunken City race in the Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Unlock Wan Sandage

Wan Sandage unlocks when you finish the Scrapper's Run race in the Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Woohoo

    20

    Perform a boost

Note: This is best done along straightaways.

In the bottom right corner of the screen is your speed. Surrounding it is a thin meter that fills up when you hold 1LSUp.gif. Once you reach your top speed and the meter fills, the circle at the top will change colors; green to yellow to red. When the circle turns yellow, press button-a.png to activate your boost, unlocking the achievement.

If you press button-y.png to taunt while boosting, you will also unlock Eat my exhaust (35G) (and Don't count on it, slimeball (20G) if you haven’t unlocked it yet).

Refer to Kessel Run (70G) for information on achieving 1000 MPH.
  • Finish all races in first place

For this achievement, you need to place first in all 25 races. You could do this the traditional way by actually racing or you can use Debug Mode to easily win each race in about 25 seconds.

The first thing you should do, regardless of your method, is change the payout for every race to ‘Winner Takes All’. That way, you can maximize your winnings and purchase the best parts available to you, provided you place first in every race. Also, truguts are only awarded the first time you race on a track; there is no prize for any subsequent races on the same track. Refer to You came, you looked around, you bought (70G) for more information about that.

Note: If you feel that you will not place first in a race, simply pause the game and restart it. It will not penalize you and you will have unlimited chances to win.

If you play the game the intended way, as long as you are purchasing better parts and using tactics and strategy to win each race, you should come in first place the majority of the time. The A.I. isn’t very smart but sometimes can surprise you. As long as you choose a decent racer, like Anakin, you should have no problem.

If you wish to use Debug Mode, you can place first in each race in a matter of seconds. Follow the ‘Debug Mode’ section in the roadmap above to set it up.

With that set up, after you select ‘Start Race’, during the countdown, pause the game and press dpad-left.png, dpad-down.png, dpad-right.png, then dpad-up.png on the D-pad and a new option will appear called ‘Game Cheats’. Select that option and a new menu will open up. In this list, change these options:

    • ‘Debug Level’ - change from 0 to 6
    • ‘AI Level x10’ - lower to around 5.00
Note: For every race, you will need to lower the ‘AI Level x10’ every time, but the ‘Debug Level’ stays the same.

You can also turn Mirrored Mode on for Left.. I mean, right! (70G) and Invincibility Mode.

The last thing that needs to be done is to press lb.png four times. Doing this changes the position of your HUD displayed on the screen. It’s correct when you see double vertical lines on either side of the screen, and this shows the position numbers of all the racers and is the best way to determine when to use the cheat. With all that set up, press button-b.png twice to continue the countdown.

When the race starts, hold rt.png like normal to accelerate. When you are decently in first place (noted by the numbered squares along the top edge of the screen), press and hold button-y.png to rewind the race so you are before the starting line. If it is too quick, the way to determine this is to hold button-y.png until your position icon (#1) goes from the top of the screen to the left of the screen (the corner is the starting line). Release button-y.png then hold rt.png to accelerate past the starting line which will count as one lap. Repeat two more times (hold button-y.png to rewind then rt.png to accelerate past the starting line) to complete laps 2 and 3 and win the race.

Note: Make sure you are in first place before you hold button-y.png to rewind!

It may take a couple of times to get used to it but it is a rather simple process. Repeat this process for every race in every circuit and not only will you have accumulated enough truguts for Serv-O-Droid, Inc. (35G) and You came, you looked around, you bought (70G), you will have unlocked this achievement.
  • Unlock Teemto Pagalies

Teemto Pagalies unlocks when you finish the Mon Gazza Speedway race in the Amateur Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Unlock Fud Sang

Fud Sang unlocks when you finish the Vengeance race in the Amateur Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Purchase all of the best upgrades

    *MISSABLE*

Caution: This achievement is missable because you only have one opportunity to win truguts (money) in each race. All subsequent races on the same track do not award you with truguts, no matter what you place. Therefore, it is possible that you will not possess enough truguts for this achievement.

Note: If using Debug Mode, it is best to wait until you have won first place in all 25 races before you buy anything as you won’t need any upgraded parts to win each race.

Before you begin your first race, make sure you change your ‘Winnings’ to ‘Winner Takes All’. That way, if you place first in every race, you are guaranteed to possess enough truguts for this achievement. Just make sure you place first!

‘Winner Takes All’ Winnings: 91,300 truguts

    • Amateur Podracing Circuit - 15,400 truguts (2200 each race)
    • Semi-Pro Podracing Circuit - 23,100 truguts (3300 each race)
    • Galactic Podracing Circuit - 30,800 truguts (4400 each race)
    • Invitational Podracing Circuit - 22,000 truguts (5500 each race)
There are 7 upgrades you need to purchase for this achievement. You should only be purchasing the best upgrade for each category as lesser upgrades will just be a waste of truguts. The total cost for all 7 upgrades is 73,900 truguts. Once you purchase all 7 upgrades, the achievement will unlock.

    Best upgrades to be purchased:

    1. Traction: R-600 Repulsorgrip - 6,000 truguts
    2. Turning: Control Stabilizer - 7,500 truguts
    3. Accelerate: Mag-6 Injector - 14,000 truguts
    4. Top Speed: Block6 Thrust Coil - 20,000 truguts
    5. Air Brake: Quadrijet Air Brake - 14,000 truguts
    6. Cooling: Turbo Coolant Pump - 5,400 truguts
    7. Repair: Cluster2 Power Plug - 7,000 truguts
If you don’t end up with enough truguts from races, there is a method you could do called the ‘Junkyard Strategy’. This method has been explained in detail in the PST.org trophy guide by HaoleDave.
  • Taunt during a boost

Refer to Woohoo (20G) for more information.
  • Repair your engines from "warning" back to stable as Anakin

Note that you need to be racing with Anakin Skywalker for this. Start any race and as you are proceeding down the track, boost your racer a couple of times (1LSUp.gif then button-a.png). As your speed increases, you will get a warning in the bottom left of the screen. It will first say ‘Temp Warning’, and as you continue at a higher speed, it will then say ‘Overheat’ and finally ‘Engine Fire’. At that point, you will see flames coming from your engine. To repair them, hold rb.png until your engine stabilizes and the achievement will unlock.
  • Unlock Sebulba

Sebulba unlocks when you finish the Boonta Classic race in the Galactic Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Unlock Slide Paramita

Slide Paramita unlocks when you finish the Ando Prime Centrum race in the Invitational Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Unlock Aldar Beedo

Aldar Beedo unlocks when you finish the Beedo's Wild Ride race in the Amateur Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Unlock Bozzie Baranta

Bozzie Baranta unlocks when you finish the Abyss race in the Invitational Podracing Circuit in first place.
  • Max out your Pit Droid Crew

There are three additional Pit Droids you can purchase to earn this achievement. They cost 1000 truguts each. Truguts are earned by winning races.

Once you have enough credits, in the main menu before you start a race, select ‘Buy Pit Droids’. On the next screen, just select ‘Buy’ and once you’ve purchased all three, the achievement will unlock.

Note: Pit Droids are useful in repairing your racer in between matches. If you are using Debug Mode, there is no need to purchase any Pit Droids during races. You can purchase them and all the other best upgrades after you have won first place in all 25 races. Refer to You came, you looked around, you bought (70G) for more information.
  • Win a race with Sebulba

Once you’ve unlocked Sebulba (refer to By far the favorite today (35G)), start a race with Sebulba as your racer and finish it in first place. The easiest race to unlock this with is the Boonta Training Course in the Amateur Podracing Circuit.

Note: If using Debug Mode, continue to use the same process as you did to win every other race. Refer to The fastest racer in the galaxy (70G) for more information.
  • Complete a Mirrored Race

Mirrored Mode unlocks when you have won first place in all 25 races. It is a toggle option when you are selecting a race.

Select any circuit then choose any race. On the next screen where the game shows the track, press 1LSRight.gif to toggle ‘Mirror’ to ‘On’. Finally, start the race and complete it; no matter what place you finish, this achievement will unlock.

Note: If using Debug Mode, you can toggle Mirrored Mode on and off without having actually unlocked it.
