2K's Cloud Chamber studio is seemingly “ramping up” development on the next BioShock, more than eleven years on from the release of the last entry, BioShock Infinite.

Senior Cinematic Designer Jeff Spoonhower said as much on LinkedIn (via Eurogamer), noting that there are more than 30 positions currently available at Cloud Chamber's BioShock team, spanning art, animation, engineering, design, narrative, and production. “We are working on a really awesome project, and our studio is remote-friendly,” Spoonhower writes.

This is, of course, a very positive step forward for a project that's been in the pipeline for around a decade, during which time original developer Irrational Games has shut down and re-emerged under the new name of Ghost Story Games, under the leadership of BioShock director Ken Levine.

While Ghost Story is hard at work on its own BioShock-style project, Judas, Cloud Chamber was formed to exclusively build a new BioShock entry, which is rumoured to be an open world sandbox affair set in Antarctica, with events that run concurrent with BioShock 1 and 2.

It'll be some time before we see anything concrete from the next BioShock, however, but it's nice to hear that work is gathering some pace.

  • I think the original trilogy worked fine as linear , not sure we need an open world
  • Open-world? What could go wrong?
  • Please don’t do that to this franchise, I love linear games and Bioshock is one of the few franchises that really nails that perfectly, now you’re like hey guys fuck what we do amazing at let’s go a totally different route..

  • This’ll probably be just as good as the upcoming open world Resident Evil.
