One of the biggest expenses early on in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is resting at inns, so that you can a.) advance time; but more importantly, b.) so you can recover your loss gauge. The loss gauge in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a temporary maximum health reduction that happens when you take damage, meaning that you’ll have to rest fairly regularly.
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you can rest at two places, essentially: 1. You can set up camp; and 2. You can stay at an Inn. Now, both of these are incredibly expensive early on, because camping kits are expensive, and heavy to lug around, while Inns can set you back thousands of gold per rest.
There is an alternative!
When in Vernworth, seek out Mildred, who can be found in the alleyway southeast of The Stardrop Inn. Mildred will ask you to look after her house for a week, and kick off a quest called “A Place to Call Home.”
This side quest will allow you to rest in Vernworth without spending a penny for a whole week, saving you an absolute ton of gold in the process.
Now, this won’t last forever, and after a week or so, Mildred will return home. Thankfully, she offers you her house to buy at a paltry 20,000 gold (the equivalent of 10 nights at Shakir’s Inn). So, yes, you should buy this house for a number of reasons.
Firstly, you’re going to spend a lot of time in and around Vernworth, so that investment is worth it. Secondly, you’ll unlock the A House? In This Economy? achievement. Thirdly, it’s cheaper than the other property in the area - for instance, there’s a house for sale in the Noble Quarter of Vernworth, but Salvatore wants a whopping 200,000 gold for it. And lastly, your house is not only important for free resting, but your friends will not only come by and drop off presents for you (Captain Brant gifted us a great little sword and Glyndwr gave us a Ferrystone), but they’ll come by often and ask you for assistance, which will net decent returns in gold.
So, that’s how you get to rest for free in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and even earn some sweet gifts and gold as a result. It effectively pays for itself! Plus, you get a free week’s accommodation before you have to cough up any money, which will see you through the early periods in the game where gold is not a luxury.
