Shmup, or shoot ‘em ups, are a sub-genre of shooter video games, where the player usually controls a spaceship or character, and has to defend itself from a ton of targets than rain down on the player, using a variety of weapons. Shmups usually take a side-on or top down perspective and have the player defeating progressively harder waves of enemies as you make your way through the levels, while also grabbing extra lives and more powerful weapons to assist with the difficulty along the way. We’re talking Galaga, Geometry Wars and Halo: Spartan Assault here, all very similar experiences with different styles and hooks, but all shmups.
