The platformer genre is actually a sub-genre of the action genre, whereby emphasis is put on the player to traverse through a level. This often involves jumping from platform to platform to advance, climbing, navigating through hostile environments, swinging from vines and so on. The earliest and best examples of a platformer date back to Space Panic (1980) and Donkey Kong (1981). As technology has evolved, so has the genre. We’ve gone from single-screen platformers like Donkey Kong, and 2D like Pitfall!, to side scrolling platformers like Super Marios Bros., and 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot. Once one of video games’ most popular genres, the platforming genre is still a popular genre, but tends to be more niche these days. Here’s Xbox’s best platformers.
