Best Xbox Games of 2023

If you thought 2022 was chaotic, 2023 was perhaps even more chaotic. 2023 saw the rise of AI, the coronation of King Charles III after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, tons of Hollywood strikes, and a ridiculous amount of conflict around the world. Le sigh. The cost of living crisis continued and the world was literally on fire again too. Fun times.

2023 was the year of Barbie, Oppenheimer,  the brilliant The Last of Us adaptation, and the year that Doja Cat's ‘Paint the Town Red’ dominated social media. Speaking of social media, Elon Musk rebranded Twitter to X, although everyone still calls it Twitter. Man City won the elusive treble in 2023 too, while Harry Kane finally left Spurs.

In the gaming sphere, 2023 was the year that Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard was finally approved, despite the UK government's best efforts to be a party pooper. Xbox had a transformative year too, after the disappointment that was 2022. It was the year that they continued their Persona charge, with 3 Persona games launching on the platform - something that was unthinkable 18 months ago. On top of that, while Forza Motorsport was a bit of a disappointment, the Xbox releases of Stray and Ghostwire Tokyo added to the delight that was Starfield, and the potential surprise of the year, Hi-Fi Rush, to mean that Microsoft and Xbox had a pretty fabulous year - and that's before even taking into account the fact that the Series S delayed the true GOTY, Baldur's Gate 3.

Third-party wise, 2023 was a banger. It was the year that Alan Wake 2 finally launched, as well as the frankly great Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 4 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. On top of that, Diablo IV, Assassin's Creed Mirage, Dead Island 2 and Remnant 2 also impressed, as well as Monster Hunter Rise, Lies of P and Mortal Kombat 1 which all landed with a similar bang. 2023 was the year that FromSoftware returned to their roots with Armored Core 6, and EA launched their first football game without the FIFA branding, FC 24. Oh, and Cyberpunk 2077 received the brilliant Phantom Liberty DLC too, as well as the hefty 2.0 update. 2023 was a great year for games!
