As far as seismic years go, 2011 was a monumental year, with a handful of games that would shape the future of games for quite some time. It was the year that Skyrim first launched, the year that Dark Souls and the Souls genre was properly born, and it was the year that Minecraft finally officially released. To a lesser extent, LA Noire set a new standard in facial mo-cap too. 2011 was also the year of the 3s: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Gears of War 3, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3 and FEAR 3 all launched. In terms of world events, the catastrophic Japanese earthquake and tsunami dominated the headlines, as did the resignation of Fidel Castro and the takedown of Osama Bin Laden. Steve Jobs, Kim Jong-Il and Colonel Gaddafi all passed away in 2011, while the Iraq war ended, and Prince William married Kate Middleton. Remember the meltdown from Charlie Sheen following his sacking from ‘Two & A Half Men’? Yes, that was 2011. It was also the year that Game of Thrones started and the first Captain America and Thor films dropped, as well as the brilliant David Fincher’s take on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. In terms of games, Duke Nukem Forever came out in 2011 after more than a decade in development. It was awful. 2012 also saw the WiiU announced, the 3DS launch worldwide, and the PlayStation Vita launch in Japan. 2011 was also the year that Twitch launched, which was pretty damn seismic if you ask us! Not only that, but the Supreme Court in the US declared video games are protected under free speech in 2011, while Sony pulled down the PSN for 23 days after a monumental hack. 2011 also gave us the first glimpse at GTA V, with the first trailer; and DC Universe Online tried giving away their game for free to compete with World of Warcraft. It worked, increasing their traffic ten-fold, and thus breathing life into the free-to-play model that would rise in popularity as the decade goes on. Like I said, seismic. It had some great games too. Here’s the best Xbox games of 2011.
