Best Xbox Games of 2009

The late noughties absolutely was a golden era of games, the likes of which we’ve not really seen since. Everywhere you look the bangers still continued to drop - even after the dizzy heights of 2007 and 2008. Modern Warfare 2, Arkham Asylum, Assassin’s Creed 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and so many others. What a time to be alive. Outside of games, 2009 was the year of the UK MP expenses scandal, the year that swine flu reared its ugly head, the year Michael Jackson passed away, and the year that infamous Tiger Woods car crash happened outside his own house. Yikes. 2009 was also the year Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs when she won Best Female Video with his whole “Imma let you finish” outburst. Perhaps more lasting though, 2009 was the year Disney bought Marvel for $4b, and Avatar became the highest grossing movie of all-time (a title it still holds in 2022!). It’s safe to say it was far more eventful in games though! E3 finally returned to LA after 2-years of awfulness elsewhere, while EA closed down Pandemic Studios (yes, 2 years after buying it) and Microsoft shut down Ensemble Studios! In more pleasant news though, Ubisoft opened Ubisoft Toronto; Crytek bought Timesplitter devs, Free Radical Design, and renamed them Crytek UK; while Square Enix bought Tomb Raider and Deux Ex owners, Eidos Interactive, for £84.3m! Project Natal (AKA Kinect) was also unveiled in 2009, while it was reported that Kameo 2 was canned, even before it was announced! UFC boss, Dana White, chose 2009 to go to war with EA, threatening to ban any of his fighters who appeared in their upcoming MMA game. Gulp! 1 vs. 100 also launched in 2009, while Alpha Protocol was delayed after its previously announced release date, which was a first! Sony launched the PSP Go and the PS3 Slim this year too. Anyway, here’s what 2009’s best Xbox games were.
