Best Xbox Games of 2008

Following up the incredible 2007 was always going to be tricky, but 2008 had a good go of it, thanks to GTA IV, Fallout 3, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2. Outside of games though, it was a turbulent year. 2008, of course, was the year that the Russian and Georgian conflict kicked-off. It was also the year of the infamous 2008 stock market and housing bubble collapse, leading to the Great Recession. On top of that it was also the year Kosovo declared independence, Barack Obama was elected US President, and the world’s largest particle accelerator, the Cern Large Hadron Super Collider, was turned on. In pop culture, Heath Ledger tragically passed away, and Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. It was also the year of Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face,’ Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’ and Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies.’ From a games industry perspective, in 2008 Sony launched ‘PlayStation Home’ while Microsoft rolled out the new 'Xbox Experience.' GTA IV finally launched in 2008, selling 10 million copies, but more significantly, renegade anti-video games lawyer Jack Thompson was disbarred for professional misconduct. 2008 was also the year Activision merged with Vivendi to create Activision Blizzard, while Tomonobu Itagaki and Tecmo finally went their separate ways. But that wasn’t it! 2008 was also the year that Final Fantasy made its way to Xbox, Fallout returned after a 10-year hiatus, Sony launched its trophy system to rival Microsoft’s achievement system, and EA experimented with some new IPs in Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge. It was another good year for games. Here’s Xbox’s best games of 2008.
